Question Plugs for '69 S? Greetings To All! My First Post.

Is the Bosch W3DPO the plug I should use for a '69 S or is there a better plug?


Kudos to all for participating! Looks like a great source of information. I've been watching from the shore and figured it's time to jump in! I've been driving 912's and could use some advice on my first 911.

Here's the situation:
Picked up a '69 911T with a fresh stock '69 S engine. It had not been run for some time as it was a resto/track project and I am going to rebuild the carbs. No MFI here. (I have completed the usual "car sitting" steps and have driven the car.) Also there is no CDI. The carbs are Weber 40IDS (S has enrichment jets). I have a Permatune I can use and would like any advice offered. I have previously rebuilt 40IDF's and other carbs.

-Any info on jetting or tips on the rebuild?
-Does the Permatune sound like a good way to go?
-Coil? Should I replace it? I have a new Bosch Blue available.
-Which spark plugs? Is platinum the way to go?

My car is a 2.4T but the jets are meant for 2.0L car (I think). My jettings are 45 idle, 175 air jets, 27mm venturies and F1 emulsion tubes. Don't remember what the others are, but I think you can find the values with the BBS search option (carb jets, carb jetting).

Permatune is ok, as long as it works. Bosch CDI is the same "performance" but if you are buying old one, make sure its ok.
(Bosch CDI units have their internal wiring made with solid copper wires and this causes soldering joints to crack after time. )

Is permatune already attached to the car? If so you must have right coil for it too.

Don't remember the plugs, I browsed Haynes manual and chose the right one from there. If you can find 4-point plugs go for those, they last long and produce a better spark.

Warren reads this too, propably, so how goes it with DIY CDI rebuild thingamob?

I thought the permatune was the one that everyone had problems with?

Hi Bob;
I've got a '69 911E with "S" pistons and it has a third ignition option installed: A Crane optical pick-up in the distributor driving an MSD6 ignition. The car came with the Crane parts installed and it is great not having to play with points. I installed the MSD and it really helped smooth out the idle and improved part throttle running below 3500 RPM. The car pulls smoothly from about 1500 through 7000. I suspect that the multiple sparks help to cover-up the shortcomings of the 2.0 heads when using the "S" pistons with the deep domes. I guess it is similar to running a dual-plug set-up. I've still got the wiring diagrams if you chose to go that path since the MSD documentation is a little vague in places.

zendalar, loose the 45 idle jets and go to 55, unless you like the hard start, popping and hesitation. it's a whole new world.

I've done a search on past posts and I am leaning toward NGK BP7ES. Sounds like W3DPO is too cold. Help me out guys.

(Good to hear from you Josh. I'll be on the 912 Board also.)

Bob, I don't think you'll find too much argument around here on the NGK, it's been a good plug for a lot of S engines, a very nice alternative to Bosch.

Looks like my starting point is to go with NGK BP7ES w/gap of .030 and perhaps a hotter plug for tuning/carb adjustment.

Bruce Anderson told me the Permatune has always been good but some have reported problems with them so unsure what to recommend. Said MSD seems to be good choice. I'll confirm I'm getting a strong spark.

Will the stock coil or Bosch Blue be acceptable or should I use another coil w/the Permatune?

Thanks for your help. Any other thoughts?
