Side window tint removal
 

Hello- I would like to remove the tint film on the side windows. How is this best done-solvent? heat gun? Thanks

Mine just peeled off with a razor blade.

And if the above doesn't work. Ammonia diluted around 75%, with 25% water, warm garage space...or in the sun on a summer day is best. Cover door panel and other areas with plastic, ammonia will stain just like clorox, spray on and keep damp until it comes off easily with a clean sharp razor with only forward motions (not back and forth) as it will minimize the chances of scratching your glass.

To add to the above ammonia recipe:

Spray the window with the ammonia solution, then cover with a pre-cut piece of black plastic (garbage bag). This will keep the solution from evaporating too quickly. The garbage bag/solution goes on the INSIDE of the window. Face that window toward the sun (the hotter day, the better) and wait about 30 ~ 60 mins. The tinting will peel off easier than a drunk college girls panties...

Use a small steamer (like from Walgreen's for $25 or so) to heat it up - the film on each of my side windows peeled off in a single sheet once heated sufficiently with the steamer. Did the back window as well - easy peasy!

Whoa whoa whoa, before you start huffing that ammonia, just hang on a second.
I've used both methods, the ammonia and the clothing steamer.
Please, do yourself a humongous favor, use the clothing steamer.
The ammonia is effective, but messy, and the vapors are noxious.
The clothing steamer is incredibly simple and clean.
I did my side windows in October in all of 5 minutes TOTAL.

I borrowed a small "travel steamer"...so small it only had less than a cup of water...but good for about 20 minutes. But that was all it took for one door and yes, they peeled off in whole sheets. I started at a top corner and worked my way down. Taped a plastic sheet at the bottom of the window to keep stray moisture off the door panel.

One sheet left a little "adhesive" behind, but the steamer softened it up to the point when I could wipe it off with a towel.

steamer works ok.

I prefer the ammonia b/c it is faster and more thorough.

There is no need to mix up a specific batch of diluted ammonia. Just use Windex or any window cleaner that contains ammonia, and do the above mentioned procedure with the precut trash bag and sunlight and/or heat. It will work like a charm.

I am glad I never threw out the garmet steamer my Mom gave me before I went to college...never had any need for it until now!
