Success, I pulled (a little too) hard and that piece came out... along with some of the backing (nothing I can't fix when I reassemble).
Thanks again for the tip!

was the backing glued to it or something, or did it catch on something?

Gilles, if you want the one I have that is slightly damaged on the end of it, I can send it to you to use until you can find one. I just looked at it again and a resourceful guy could repair it with a little bit of FG cloth.

The backing was glued to it, and the glue did let go in some places and not others so part of the backing is attached to the carpet and board I removed, and the rest is still in the car. Nothing too complicated, but I'll take pictures in the morning.

Thanks Shane but at this time the car is apart for the interior refurb and then it will be brakes/suspensions R/R so I am at least 2 months out before it is drivable again... I'll let you know if things change.;)

When I purchased my '88 Cabby, those hand pulls were attached with sheet metal screws. You can order those from our host....if you can't find the part number, talk to one of PP's Service Reps.

What is the consensus on replacing that rear insulation piece with something made of a modern material?
