Who needs a Crankcase Breather Gasket anyway!
So I am moving on to my next fix, the replacement of the crankcase breather cover gasket. It wasn't leaking (I don't think) but I thought "while I'm in there. . ." So I open up the cover to find this:
![]() That's right, Nothing! ![]() ![]() ![]() Quick Question, Do I use a little gasket sealer on the mating surface of the case to the gasket? I think I remember saying to do it somewhere but I can't remember now. Thanks, Michael

That looks like gasket sealed to the crankcase to me.

The surface is silver. Yours is black. You think that is caked on oil-it's not. It's your rock hard gasket. You need to put a clean rag in there to prevent bits from falling into your engine as you scrap off the rock hard gasket material.

It's not. there is just metal of the crankcase. I triple checked. Sorry the pic is so lousy, my point & shoot isn't good for macro shots.

Sorry didn't mean it to come out as negative. But I still think there is a gasket there. Look at the left side of the surface in the picture it has a step like a gasket not lining up with the edge of the surface of the block.

OK, I started scraping and you guys are right, there is a gasket there. Sorry. What's the best way to get rid of this baked-on mess?

Stuff a clean rag in the hole to prevent particles from falling into the crankcase and then use a scraper to remove the gasket. Any minor remains can be removed with scotchbrite or mild sandpaper.

scraper ........ but put something in the hole before you drop a load of stuff in there....
scraper , you can use a razor blade , they have spray on removers and solvents but a razor (not bic) will work fine......... |

The old adage applies. If it doesn't leak, don't fix it - or something like that.
I'd leave the gasket intact, then reinstall the cover with Loctite 574 case sealer or equivalent. This is a low pressure joint. Not worth the time and effort to remove a gasket that will eventually fragment into a hundred pieces. Instead, spend that saved time by detailing your engine compartment. Sherwood |
