Question re 80's Carrera leather options
Specifically door pocket tops/lids and door handles. If a car was ordered with the full leather trim from the factory, would Porsche just cover the standard vinyl pocket tops/lids and handles in leather OR start with a different part altogether?
I ask as I'm looking to upgrade my '87 targa interior and like the leather and stitching on the pocket tops/lids and door handles. I could try and find used or just have Dallas cover in leather if that's all that the factory did. Already had Dallas do my knob... ![]() |

I do know that the company used defective dash tops and covered in leather. Hid the dash color, the defect and wound up with a more expensive part.

As far as I have been able to tell, they just covered the regular parts with leather. As leather types and colors vary widely, you'd be money ahead to just cover what you have with the same leather they are going to use elsewhere.

Not sure how it would look but if i cover myself, I was thinking of matching the perforated center sections of the seats. Just the door handles and pocket lids/tops for now. The dash would be way out on the horizon.

I would think that would look odd. No point in it really, as the purpose of the perforations is to let the leather breathe where it contacts your body. The parts you want to cover don't have that issue. Then there is the aesthetic consideration, which I think also makes no sense.
A word of caution, if you plan to cover these yourself... parts like this require exact cuts and sewing of the individual leather pieces. It's not easy, even for pros. JR |

Good points about the perforations. I think I'll stick with smooth leather and have Dallas do the work. I'm only a pro at a few things and upholstery is not one of them.
