Parting Cars Out???
I was in the parts section and ran across a few part outs. Ran a few user name queries just to find a few individuals that seem to acquire perfectly good 911's for the (seamingly) sole purpose of parting them out. I suppose that's a way to make a buck but it seems ghoulish to me and well... I just hate to see these classics get drawn and quartered like that. They are afterall, limited in quantity. Am I the only one bothered by this practice?

they're rarely perfectly good. i parted out a 103K '87 coupe recently that had the right rear torn off, suspension included. it was a pretty nice car. i could have repaired it, but with a salvage title i would have had difficulty selling it and the price would have been lower because of that title, and didn't want to sit on it for a year, so.......... get out the sawzall. if i needed a personal car, i would have fixed it, but i have four already.

If they're in "part-out" condition, then they've already been lost to the point they can never come back. At that point it's just a collection of parts that are still bolted together.

Good point John, I would not touch most of the "perfectly good" 911's I see with a 10 foot pole.
Seriously though, most here will save a classic if it is worth saving…in fact I have seen many saved that I thought should be allowed to RIP…so for every part out I would say 2 or 3 are saved. Also, we still need parts to keep the good ones going.

With all due respect, the cars we are talking about are all not irreplaceable classics and they were built in relatively high numbers and survived in large numbers too. Any air cooled post 74 911 is to be had at every corner here it CA. If we wouldn't have these donors, parts would be tough to find and good examples even harder to bring back to the road.
And in the end, it is a free country, if it irks you, go buy all the ugly ducklings and fix them up. ![]() George |

Todd, maybe you should just go to the for sale section here, craigs list, ebay or other source and start buying any Porsche that has rust and or colision damage and you can save these clasics that are being drawn & quartered, YOU can save them all.
I have a 68 coupe at the house you can start with, although it is missing the roof and a few other minor parts that others wanted to SAVE other existing cars. Now something for you to chew on, what about the cars being saved along with keeping the price of replacement parts down by us un sensitive ones that are parting one out?? But I also have 3 others I am not parting out. Maybe do your own little protest, dont buy any used parts, every time you need something march your car saving ass down to the dealer and buy everything new, make it a movement and drive those parting cars out of the practice. That will teach them!! Regards Oh need anything from a 68 :-) |

I am sure that parting out my 911 would produce a higher yield on the money meter (if my time was free, that is) than selling outright. And I would not be shy in doing so if it came time to say goodbye. I would prefer a sale of the complete car, but most modified cars (ok, pretty much ALL) will be a big money loser at sale time. Why not maximize your return?
