Your reply helps keep this picture on front page. To my understanding, this picture was created for NY City management to be used in their internal monthly news letter. Top-Secret on how I received it. "One fireman to another" is all I can say. Pelican is the first to have it. I want the whole country to see it.

A friend of mine e-mailed this same picture to me. I've got to ask, why is his hand red? Is it a printing error?

That same picture (although in black and white) was featured in the latest MIchigan U.P. magazine, the Porcupine Press (volume 12- #11) on page 33. But I'm sure none of you have ever read that before, lol. Quite a funny publication I must say!

speedemon666.....The red hands are old style firemans gloves pre/1975. During that time, about 1975, OSHA became more involved in FD protective gear. NFPA has standards for FD gear today. Nomex and Kevlar are routine today. The red plastic gloves are sometimes unoffically used because they are waterproof. The new style gloves are not waterproof. When weather gets cold, below 32 deg, wet hands/fingers are a problem. NFPA gloves are available to the public. Costs are $25-$60 at Galls, 1-800-477-7766. The catalog is free. Catalog is 350 pages of police, FD, and EMS equipment

They may also be extrication gloves. On our department we carry red "extrication gloves". We use them primarily on extrication work (car accidents) but they're handy when doing other things where you need more dexterity (those heavy NFPA certified fire gloves make it hard to do tasks where you need lots of manual dexterity). We don't use them for firefighting, but if that picture is during the recovery operation he may be using them.

How many people on this board are firefighters? Or retired firefighters? Me? I've been retired for 3 years, after 30 years as a firefighter. Also, owned a business but that's another story........
