The year and model of car would help. Also, what transmission?
Do you have it out of the car?

sounds like a 70/71 issue. you do not need spacers etc. you pull the release fork back away from the throwout bearing and turn the bearing 90° with a screwdriver. keep the trans bolted to the engine when you do this. engine and trans out of the car as a unit of course.
if it's a later car, the release arm is removed under the bellhousing before sliding the trans off the engine.
