Passing Texas Emissions?

Does Texas still only perform visual inspection of 1980 and earlier cars or do they perform the full tests with analyzers?

Has anyone passed Texas inspection with SSI's installed?

I bought my 78 SC about a year and half ago from a guy in Fort Worth. His had been recently inspected and the air pump wasn't even hooked up and showed no evidence of having been hooked up in quite a while. It wont even turn so there is no telling how long it hadn't been working. Got it back and a few months later had to have everything adjusted, the CIS wasn't even functioning correctly all the time so I doubt it was passing the emission test, if it was, it was barely.

Dallas and Tarrant county (Fort Worth) have visual and tailpipe testing for cars 24 years and younger. If you live in an outlying county there is just a safety inspection. I am closing on a house in Parker county (just west of Fort Worth) and I won't have to deal with emissions checks any more Yeah!

Actually, I'm outside Kansas City and relocated to KC about 10 years ago from Houston. In particular, I'm trying to determine what has changed there wrt emissions checking in case I ever have to relocate back to Houston. I'm in the oil refinery business.

Auto,

One BIG problem in Texas now. If anyone is wanting to import a car from any other state to Texas, they were (before 1 Oct) charging $1 for a vehicle inspection cert. After 1 Oct they wanted to increase this charge to $225!!!! Thats just for the piece of paper, inspection NOT included.

This has now been beaten back and is in limbo at this time. At least two lawyers have filed suit against this travesty of justice, so they have pushed back the deadline until sometime 2002. I have heard Feb, or April 2002 for its popping back up again, but who really knows.

No idea if its going to re-surface but if you are really going to move back to Texas, pls contact the local tax office and make sure that you can afford to bring the car with you or not! An alternate idea is to register the car in TX now if you are sure that you are moving, just to get it done before the deadline.

BTW, I just had my 85 model with SSI exhaust inspected and they could have cared less that the exhaust is not stock. It passed the sniffer test and thats good enough for them. I live in a smaller town North of Dallas/Ft Worth so this may help if you do not live in the middle of a large town.

Houston has a sniffer test, but I'm not sure of the years, but I would bet it's down in the '70's somewhere. I actually live in Galveston Co right outside of Houston; Galveston Co does not require an emissions inspection.
I also have heard of lot's of P-car's without catalysts passing emissions inspections.
As to the $225 charge. I doubt it will go. Years ago when I lived in FL they started charging a couple of hundred dollars for each new tag thinking they would get a bunch of money from all of the yankees that retire to FL. After about a year it went to court and the State ended up having to give it back.

Same thing happened in Californa. They used to charge $300(I think, it may have been $200) to bring an out of state car into CA. They lost in court, and had to refund all of it.
