I don't have a Carrera but I would soooo love to have Motronics instead of CIS.

I guess the 3.2 owners are trying to figure it out.

The thread should have been 'Why I love my Carrera'.
Adding 'more than an SC' is the reason why it only has 3 replies ![]() |

Well looks like all the posters so far are actually SC owners... Guess that answers that question... LOL
Dump CIS for EFI or PMOs and there is no advantage to a Carerra...

I've had both, had my first SC back when Carreras were still new (and too expensive as used cars!)
Like them both, but the days of owning SCs is over for me now. Carreras only: 1) They are just newer. Although the G50 cars are still 22 years old, they are of such quality that they are still "newish" old cars. i.e., you can buy a lowish mile one (under 100K miles), and just drive it like a normal car, on its mostly original parts still, and just regular maintenance. Can still find them with original paint, original interiors, etc. that are still in excellent condition. SCs not so much anymore, just too much time has passed. 2) Motronics instead of CIS. Motronics is IMO pretty much the "sweet spot" of injection for an enthusiast/DIY car. Much, much simpler, easier to work with than the '60s designed, somewhat rube goldberg-esqe CIS system. Has just the basic sensors, all of which can easily be tested with a simple multimeter. But it's old enough to not have to deal with OBD stuff, etc. Less sensitive to fuel quality and ethanol than CIS. (That being said I've had a bunch of CIS cars, have one currently, and I don't think it's horrible. Just like DME better). 3) G50. Have had plenty of 901 and 915, much prefer the G50 these days, particularly the much simpler hydraulic clutch system, which doesn't have all the springs, countersprings, cable, etc. No adjustments, just drive and it's always perfect. (I don't think a properly set up 915 is bad, though). 4) AC works a bit better, the '86 and up larger vents help, and the more modern compressor is smaller and smoother. 5) It's just a lot easier to find a nice Carrera these days than it is to find a nice SC. They've all bottomed out in price, which IMO makes the Carrera a better value. Any decent SC is still going to be $13-$14K, but I can find G50 Carreras with under 80K miles in all original, excellent condition for under $17K (like my current one!). That being said, I think the SC is a fabulous car, it does have a little bit of a more "vintage" feel overall than the Carrera (esp. the G50). It's just so hard to find a nice, original one (I don't care for most of the "mods" that happen to these cars over the years). Last edited by McLovin; 02-09-2010 at 11:44 AM.. |

I was fortunate enough to have owned both, a metallic black '82 SC Targa and a Carrera that I still own, an 84' sunroof coupe. It just seemed to be a natural progression, moving up in models, as in onward to a 993 and then a 997. My oldest son actually harasses me to take the Carrera out(he has a 997S) because he loves the mechanical feel and lightness. I like the added torque that allows good low end performance in traffic(meaning you can lug down in fourth without the engine stumbling(my humble personal view is the Carrera is more driveable for the occasionally lazy driver in different settings than the SC). Hey, to each his own. I liked them both, but like the Carrera more.

They are both great cars. If you have a good SC, the advantages of a Carrera are not so apparent.
It is really a case of a bird in the hand beating two in the bush. Kinda like saying a coupe is better than a targa. Now if you want to rephrase the title, I'll be happy to tell you why I LOVE my CARRERA ! |

Carrera owners don't need to say how great they are. They just are better. Bigger engine, A/C and eventually a better trans ( no disrepect to the earlier carrera owners) The 915's I have driven have been fine, just like my G50

Never owned an SC, but the answer is redundant...
1) Motronic vs. CIS: The reliability factor just can't be overlooked. I've heard that when the CIS is well-sorted it is marvelous. However, there are just too many factors including vacuum, WUR etc. that seem like a total headache. Replacing a DME relay (or even the speed and reference sensors) are pretty basic. Even an idiot like me can figger it out ![]() 2) G50. 'Nuff said.

Other than the obvious as stated I like the fact the fog lights are integral in the facia. See how nice I can be

I have way too busy a schedule to be dealing with CIS...although I wish I had one of those , too (a well-sorted specimen)...
Carrera, for me, too.

If SC's are so much better how come you guys are always UPGRADING to Carrera brakes, Carrera chain tensioners and Carrera oil coolers? Oh, and we don't need no pop off valves either.
