Torsen Differential
Has any company ever successfully made a torsen differential for either a 901 or 915 transmission? I just put one in my sons Ford Mustang and it is far superior to any LSD I have ever owned. If this doesn't exist we could use it

Sure. At least two companies have made TBDs for the various Porsche models for decades ... Quaife and GT. But the handling characteristics of a rear-engined car are different than a Ford Mustang. 911's greatly prefer an LSD over a TBD ... at least for high speed performance.

Torsen Diffs
I must say that I think the Torsen Concept has limited appeal in rear wheel drive cars as it has a couple of weaknesses.
I would say that on a positive note a torsen diff will bias more torque than a typical plate type and typical values would be between 4:1 and 5.5:1 compared to a plate type which is more like 2.5:1 but the amount of bias can't be adjusted as it is a function of the gear tooth form and angles. The two weaknesses that I think limit the value of a Torsen or ATB are: If a Torsen has no torque on one wheel then it behaves as a conventional open diff and transmits no torque to the the other wheel. The second is that there is no torque bias in coast, so when the throttle is closed the unit again behaves as an open diff. A good plate diff with suitable coast ramps will continue to bias torque and will help with trailing throttle oversteer. There are two Torsen Type diffs available for 911s: There is a unit that fits the early 901 type transmission manufactured in Australia. Quaife make an ATB for thre later 911 type and also 915 Transmissions but I am not 100% sure which spline outputs are available but they are listed on the Quaife website. I would generally prefer a KAAZ plate type which is quite cost effective and well made. |

I've always loved the Torsen diffs in my Audis over the years, but tried a Quaiffe once and hated the way it worked in the 911. I'll stick with Audis for Torsens, and Guard for my 911's.

I have one in my 69 911 that I got from Patrick Motorsports and I think is far better than the LSD that I replaced. Traction is greatly improved and I like the way it handles. Just my .02 cents
