rear seat removal on a 1974
1. dumb question. anyone suggest a tool to remove the large slotted screw for the rear seats? the slot is about 3/4 wide, and shallow. Do you just wreck them and buy new ones later???
2. My seatbacks have a short strap. Are they supposed to have a catch on the back deck? No holes there on my 1974 Carrera. Catalogs suggest only later SC's have this. Anyone have a photo? thanks ![]() ![]() |

two tools together:
Biggest fattest widest screwdriver you can find vice grip clamped onto the screwdriver shaft. Use the vice grip to turn the driver while you use your entire body weight to hold it against the screw. Once it cracks loose, it's easy from there on out.

The leather strap on seat top is meant to snap on near the back window. These were around a long time on 911s -- my 1971 has them. Very high tech way to keep your back seats up

thanks for the replies
that tool looks very effective.
It just seems that no screwdriver is both very wide and fairly narrow. And the wide ones are usually very long. Perhaps my screws were overtightended.... lee farrell |

Try a few taps with a hammer on the screwdriver. They probably haven't been touched for thirty plus years. Mine yielded to a big screwdriver borrowed for a minute at a local shop.

try a small cold chisel, the end should be about right on a 3/4 an the shaft hex'd so you can grab in a plier or cresent wrench.

I use a hand-held impact driver and hit it with a hammer to loosen the screw.
Works perfectly. ![]()

thanks again. I tried a chisel, but I found the tapered end won't stay in the slot. what the heck, I guess I'm at the hammer stage...

I use this first
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947199000P?keyword=screwdriver+pro fessional+craftsman and if it won't do it, then my impact driver with bfh. The screwdriver will take a 1/2 inch wrench at the handle. |

Definitely agree with the impact driver. They are cheap and you can get one here at Schucks Auto, etc. In case you don't know, when you hit the back of it with a hammer, it applies downward force as well as twist/torque. Seems to prevent stripping the head of the screw. I recall it was a useful tool for parts on the doors. The flathead can also be replaced with other tips like phillips, torx if I remember correctly.

Try a pair of pliers on the head of the screw.

Lee,
I also have a '74 Euro Carrera that came with the M 422 Bamberg Stereo option. As this was a stereo unit it appears to have come with a rear deck incorporating two loudspeakers. The short straps from the seat backs them fix to popper studs on another two short leather straps screwed on about three inches below the top of the deck. This is a slightly different arrangement to cars without rear speakers that had a single longer leather strap. You may however find that the original rear deck has been changed which is why there is nowhere to attach them now. Unfortunately my car is not pristine like yours and is undergoing restoration but hopefully the photo illustrates the arrangement. Guy ![]() |

thanks for picture
thanks for the picture. My rear deck is new. so on your car the back seat strap connects to another strap? A "flying" connection, rather than to a fixed connector on the rear deck?

I just went through this. One thing I found is that I soaked the bolt with a penetrant (Knockem-loose), but did not get the penetrant down in the threads because of the carpeting. In my case I was replacing the carpeting so I cut away the carpet around the bolt so I could get the penetrant down on the threads.
I also used an impact screw driver, and tried a center punch to turn the bolt head, but was not successful with either of these methods. I finally drilled off the head, once I had the bolt shank exposed I was able to use Vice Grips and got the rest of the bolt out. Maybe after all the penetrant, pounding and turning the bolt finally just gave up... BTW, Pelican Parts carries these bolts. Rear Seat Attachment Screw - P/N 900 236 001 07 OEM - $6.25 each
