911 knee pads/930S console

I just got one of the 930S consoles, and I'm trying to figure out how to retrofit this to my 1980 911. It appears there is a crossmember that would go between the lower knee pads, where the ashtray currently is. Is there a difference in this opening between the pre 1985 cars and later cars. On my car, it appears that this piece is too long for my car.

Any idea on what I would have to get to get the correct opening width?

Thanks!

Chuck

i had one on a car years ago, and as i recall, you had to go to the later, pull out ashtray, if you want to use it. i can't remember how i attached the console under the dash, but i'm sure it was easy. a couple of screws or a couple of homemade brackets. you will have limited right foot clearance. some folks don't like that.
