Got a problem with my steering wheel after mountain drive.

I've got the 930s wheel, and I had to remove before going to mountain drive in order to fix my turn signal/high beam switch. It worked fine the whole day, but now I've got what sound like a metal scraping going on the column when I turn the wheel back and forth. Our drive consisted of some heavy back and forth steering manuevers to get us through the twisties. Did I damage something from the drive, or do you think I did something wrong re-installing the wheel before the drive? Again, it didn't make the noise all day during the drive, which was about 5-6 hours worth. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

Hmm...our '74 does this a little bit. I would say it could be that it needs to be greased somewhere, or there are little bits of metal in it, and just needs to be cleaned....although I would have no clue where the metal came from.

Just take it off, clean it up, regrease if it needs it, and pop it back on.

R22,

If I remember correctly, there is a circlip that needs to be behind the steering wheel. It fits into a groove on the steering shaft.

If you overtightened the nut that holds the steering wheel onto the shaft, you may have bent that circlip and made the steering wheel rub against the horn contact.

I just checked out the noise- it's coming from inside the clamshell plastic cover that houses the turn signal and wiper stalks. I can feel it if I push up on the bottom cover while turning wheel back and forth. I'm not going to go any further until my new turn signal switch arrives-WAYNE? Any ideas you guys have before this time would be appreciated.

My car started making a scraping sound after I put one of the steering column bushing sleeves in to fix the wobble in my wheel. I found the scraping sound to be less irritating than the wobble and just decided live with it... But you've seen my car - I'm willing to put up with alot more than you probably are

You may want to lube it up some when you take it apart to put the turn signal switch in.

I bought a car with the same condition ('74 Carrera) - exactly as you describe. The PO said he had no clue why, but the whole thing worked OK. It went away in a few months. I suspect a plastic part wore in. No problem since.
