Volkswagen de Mexico Denies Rumors That Bug Will Die MEXICO CITY (AP)--The Bug lives. Volkswagen de Mexico announced Wednesday that it will continue producing the classic Sedan "for an indefinite time." Mexico is the last country in which it is produced. It issued the statement in response to a Mexican newspaper story alleging that the model, whose basic design dates to the 1930s, would be discontinued. The company said it plans to produce about 40,000 Sedans this year, about the same as last year, "which demonstrates the confidence of the Mexican public in that model." The Sedan, long known as the "Bug" or the old "Beetle" in the United States, is the cheapest car on the Mexican market, selling for 74,240 pesos -$8,176. It is ubiquitous on the streets of Mexico City and other cities, where it is commonly used as a taxi, with its front passenger seat removed to ease access for passengers. |

And, there is the multi-colored panel/fender/door/truck paint option ... first used as a demo in dealer showrooms, and people started ordering it ... and it became quite popular as a production option!!!

I saw one at a VW/Porsche reunion show. It was quite nice. I would buy one in a second if I could get it smogged.
I wonder how they did it. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 RIP The Porsche Owners Gallery |
