Magnesium/Titanium RS/RSR Parts
Only considering the pre-73 and impact bumper road and race cars, which parts did Porsche make in magnesium or titanium to use on their factory racing programmes.
Other than the obvious mag engine block, transmission housing, inlet stack, wheels and ti 74 RSR axles there must have been a bigger list than this. Please educate me with pictures as to what parts were made using these materials and on what cars were they used. Also is anyone remanufacturing these parts and how much do original parts sell for? |
-I know they stopped using the titanium axles because of its low thermal conductivity... over heating the bearings.
-The Mag case won many awards, including being the worlds largest magnesium injection mold until that time... there are several reasons why they stopped including US thermal reactors/CATs helped kill the longevity of those motors. -The high butterfly slide valves were really only good at full throttle, they are a bit temperamental in any other position. |
Not on the 917. They just started using a "live" front stub axle so the heat was in a more managable area. They used Titanium for the prop shaft and half-shafts, too.
On a 911, Transaxle housing and Engine case, chain boxes, MFI pump, fan, for the earlier, smaller cars was Magnesium. Wheels were Magnesium on the center-locks. Titanium... not so much. The center lock nut I think was Ti. Maybe some valvetrain components. The RSR/ST strut brace with rod ends was Titanium because it was a 917 rear radius arm. 917 used much more Ti- bolts, etc. |
