I have been told to ONLY use soap and water when cleaning my Fuchs wheels, and to not use any cleaner solvent, NEVER. However, I have also been told to spray the entire wheel with WD-40 in order to give them a bit of a shine, and to act as a protectant from dust/dirt, that would normally stick. Has anyone else tried this? I'll await your input.

I firmly agree with the "soap and water" only for Fuchs. A good rule of thumb is to wash the wheels with whatever car wash soap you are using to wash the paint on the car.
WD40 doesn't sound like a good idea to me. If you have the owner's manual, check it out, the factory recommends treating the wheels only with petroleum jelly (i.e. Vaseline). This works well in restoring shine and gloss, and won't hurt the wheels in any way. |

I wash my polished Fuchs with soap and water. I also hit them with a little Mother's polish and they shine up amazingly.

I do not have fuchs, but Bruce Anderson suggests using a pH balanced cleaner like P21S. Then condition the anodized portions periodically with petroleum jelly.

Petroleum jelly; yeah, right. That stuff's nothing but a magnet for brake dust unless you get it all off afterwards. What a greasy, dirty mess you end up with if you don't!
I know they recommend you "treat" them periodically with petroleum jelly, and the stuff makes 'em look great initially, but if you don't get it all off, I believe it can be counter productive when it attracts corrosive brake dust. My recommendation: use pj if you must, but get it all off, then use a good quality, hard wax to insulate those Fuchs from corrosive brake dust. Between waxings and washes, wipe off additional accumulations of brake dust with a soft cloth. regards, jlex. |
