Part number of the filter for a 72 is 901 201 023 05.

Grady, to clarify, you plugged the original return / bajonet opening and use the gas heater opening right? Only worry is water build up at the bottom of the tank. Did you experience any problems?

To not confuse things, we are talking about ONLY cars 1973 and earlier (not ’73.5 CIS). The 1973.5 and later cars use a different system with a different filter screen.

Best,
Grady

just to be clear, you do think that the screen filter should be removed and cleaned periodically for the 1973.5 and later cars, right?

I'm a bit confused. Left is my fuel filter, middle my return line and the right is redundant. So to Grady's solution, the return should go into the right port using an old filter? What to use to plug the old return line?
Thanks for helping.
