Driving a Porsche in a non Porsche state
Even with an unpainted fender from the cat avoidance adventure....I get a compliment on my ride EVERY time I take it out now that I'm in Nevada.
It's been backdated to 73 body panels....maybe it's because it's a cab with a roll bar, dunno. Anyone have the same experience? |

Only aircooled 911 in town there is 1 late model water cooled and a 928 and I get thumbs up and comments every time I am out in it and the odd challenge from the high school kid who has slammed his S10 to a light to light race.

I get the stop light engine revving challenges from everything from Yarises (Yari??) to Chev Tahoes hauling a trailer. Weird...
Anyway, my 911 is unusual enough here to elicit comments from people at the gas station, local pub, grocery store...

I get that everytime I go out in San Diego. My wife thinks it's crazy.

Los Angeles is so jaded with expensive cars, your old Porsche wouldn't have gotten any attention 'round these parts unless it had been on fire and attended to by no fewer than 5 fire trucks. But most places in the US aren't like that. When I had my 930 while living in Portland, I'd have strangers come over and strike up conversations 50% of the time I took it out. I think that's happened maybe twice, here in LA.
Edited based upon Ed's And Billy's clarifying experiences, below.

Another piece of evidence that LA and SD are very different.

I have only had my 89 Targa for a few months, but I get frequent comments from people at gas stations or at a light. My Intermeccanica replica of a 1959 Convertible D gets smiles, thumbs up, "Beautiful!" , thrown at it all the time. It is popular with all ages and sexes. A little kid will go nuts at the sight of it, and a 75 year old lady will tell me a story about her boyfriend who had one and smile at the memory. San Diego still has folks that dig the old P Cars!

that's because you are all drug dealers.
we know this thanks to Michael Mann's documentary work in the 80's.

Most of the attention I get comes from kids. For some reason this car causes young kids to drop their jaw and point. It makes me smile because I am a kid at heart so I can relate to them.

I once had a whole scool-class of teenagers stop dead in their tracks, all the boys had their mouths open... One pointed at the car and shouted "look a Porsche Carrera" (my car is an ordinary 911 S from 1974) as I stopped for the stop light.
What to do? Light up the rear wheels and go for it (really mature, I know) the teatcher didn't look much impressed though

I don't drive it that much but it seems people go out of their way to speed up and pass me on my way to work. When I drive the truck it is not like that.

Although there aren't more than 2 or 3 911's in this county, I don't get hardly any looks (except from those 'in the know' or grade school kids). The time I really get noticed & lots of comments is when I drive my 1970 VW bug. Everyone has either owned one, worked on one or has fond memories of them. Lots of "thumbs up" for the bug... it's weird.
