Unhappy $13k 97 993

I just want to make some of you as sick as I feel right now. I saw an add for a 1997 993 for $12,995 on the internet. I knew this was a typo so I called the dealer to get the 'real' price. It WAS NOT a typo! The car sold 3 weeks ago for the asking price of $12,995! There was a story with the car the salesman wouldn't disclose, so who knows. I am still sick to my stomache!

That is a pity. Personally I would have bought it and sold it for it's resale value.

I can guarantee you something was definitely wrong with that car (wrecked, flood salvage, something).

Does it matter what the story was???

The engine, wheels, and brakes were worth that alone.

A 993 would have to be put through a crusher for you to be unable to get $13k worth of parts out of it.

Maybe that was the story...

I read a similar story once, long before the Internet became widely available. Perhaps an urban legend, but the story was that someone had died in a Porsche and the body was not discovered for quite a while. By then the stench had so permeated the car that nothing but nothing could remove it. Obviously, this was a sore reminder of the deceased to their loved one, and they just wanted rid of the car. For such a song of an asking price, I think I'd find some way to get the car smelling good again.

Of course you've all heard the divoce-forcing-car-sale story. Divorce closes, man gets proceeds from sale of Mercedes but leaves town while ex-wife sells the car. Newspaper ad says asking price is $1. Talk about a quick sale.

Heard that same story 30 yrs ago as a kid in high school, only it was a Corvette.

Somebody is one lucky SOB! As much as I love my car, I think I could handle upgrading to a 993 and then selling my car and making a few thousand!

Sounds like another Darrel Waltrip story . . .

Just as a follow up, here is an email I received from the dealership:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting me with your purchase request.
The Porsche 911 has been sold.
Just so you know (so many people have asked), it was not a wreck, scrap, or
junk.
It belonged to the owner of the dealership, and he wanted to get rid of it as
quickly as possible.
I appreciate the opportunity to earn your business, and I hope to some day
have a vehicle
you might be interested in.

Wink

Ahh, now it comes out.

It belonged to the dealership owner but was sold by one of the salesman.

Disgruntled employee, perhaps?

It could also be the old "Bait-n-Switch" technique. The low price garners attention. You call, but that particular car is gone. The salesman insists they have other models (at a more normal price) that you can look at.
You will tend to check out their inventory/ads now that they've brought themselves to your attention. Just hoping to find another "Deal".
You may even tell your friends, or send them the link to that dealerships' page. LOTS of advertising.
Questionable marketing approach, but effective.

I don't believe it either.

Here's the deal. A used car business owner (or salesman) is not going to give away a car for a "fast sell" at 60% below wholesale under any circumstances to the public. All dealers have auction connections - he could have had fast cash for that car the same day or within one day via a wholesale dealer auction or one of his many wholesale contacts. This story is pure B.S.
