964 engine carrier in a 74' tub?!?

I need some clarifications please! I get some confusing opinions from reading different threads...

Can I use a 964 engine carrier in a 74' 3.6 911? I will not use the usual 1'' spacers, the rear shelf is removed and I dont want to move the motor back (Thimmins) style. If anything I would love to get the motor forward a little... If anyone has info or pics. that would be great!

Regards,
Carl

Carl,
You can use an early cradle and crossmember, too. SC / Carrera and earlier.

Those bolt to the 964 / 993 engines. I would probably modify an early cradle to move the engine forward. With the early cradle, you might have to eliminate the harmonic balancer and go with a Patrick Motorsports crank pulley. They've said it does not harm the crank to run without a harmonic balancer. Supposedly, Porsche has done this too. Not my place to say if this is harmful or not.

I'd probably run the 964 cradle and build spacers to the cross member, which will move the engine forward. You can beef up the crossmember.

Doug,

I want to use the 964 carrier I have, I've allready installed the rothsport lightweight crank pulley and single RS fan hub. I would really like to get the motor fore a little, would you have any details of setups like this?

Carl

Carl,
The used carriers are cheap, so I'm not sure I'd fixate on using your current one, but there are many ways to address the issue.

I'd probably add 1" to 2" steel spacers and weld them to the carrier so they space the crossmember moving the whole assembly forward. I'd then gussett anything which looks to be exposed to additional stress. It is common to gusset the crossmembers anyways. Then again, I think you could space the entire carrier away from the crankcase. That might be stronger than extending the carrier itself.

Spacing the engine forward does open up the issue of making the tins fit, but that is addressable.

In these two photos you can see the bolts in my setup which attach the crossmember to the carrier.

Cheers,

Doug

Doug,

I see exactly what you mean now, thats a very good option.

LOL I'm not fixating on the carrier I have... It's just there sitting in the garage!
If I cant find a good way of using mine I'll get an older one and mod it as you did.

Thanks for the help!

Carl

Carl,
I gotcha and better to fixate on more important things in life

Glad it helped. I've thought about moving my engine, too, but my rear seat / parcel shelf is in tact. I don't have the motivation to tear it all apart again, though I'm sure the benefit will be nice.

I've seen the work on your cage - fine job! Looks like fun.

Doug

I've heard of people achieving 42-58 weight distribution with the motor forward a couple inches. I think the time invested in this mod is worth it...

Thanks for the compliments Doug, I've been hard at work but a little lazy on updating my build thread! And yes, I'm having great fun... This one isnt even close to being finished and I'm allready thinking of the next one!!!

Regards,
Carl
