Rear Seat Fastener System 1977

Can someone explain the concept here? My 42K mile 911s coupe has the two 5-6 inch leather straps with snaps on the backs of the rear seats. It also has two approximately 2 inch brackets on the package tray. Each pair of straps and brackets are offset by about 5-6 inches from each other from front to rear. With the seat back against the rear padding, there is a distance of 12-14 inches between the top of the seat and the bracket on each seat. What am I missing here? What holds the seats in the upright position? There is no way the straps can fit through the brackets much less snap to the back of the seat.

There is supposed to be two short leather straps with the male buttons on each vertical end of the back panel, when it is the factory speaker version. Looks like yours are missing.
OR cars without factory speakers, had the male buttons just on the rear facing side of that upper panel ridge

Mine is w/o factory rear speakers, and I see where the snaps were mounted on the upper panel ridge. Where is the best place to buy two of these?

With that solved, what are the two brackets on the package tray? Are they OEM, PO added, and what is their purpose?

Sorry I didn't completely read your second post. You got it.
Snap. Look to see if you have Perfett McDonald (sp) store. It's the supply store for auto/boat upholstery guys. I bought the dye for my sparco seats.
They have everything.

OEM, designed to allow you to attach luggage straps. Two similar brackets should be located below the rear seats, about halfway to the floor.

The "never have figured out what this is for" U shaped bracket is for the luggage strap. Fold down the rear seats, put your suitcases in, use leather strap to hold down suitcases so they don't fly into your head when you rally over the Julier Pass to St. Moritz.

At this point in their history, most of our cars no longer have the strap that goes through that bracket.

Thanks guys! Y'all are sooooo smart and a wealth of information! These two things have been bugging me ever since I bought my car. The snap answer was pretty obvious once I was pointed in the right direction, but I probably would never have figured out the luggage deal. I had never noticed the two lower brackets. I had to go out with my flashlight to look, and: Yep! There they are! Now I can sleep soundly tonight! Thanks again!

P.S. Anybody got a picture of the leather luggage strap/straps?
