WTK: 72 911E oil weight for desert use.
I brought Old Yeller from N. Idaho to Southern AZ and I wonder which weight oil would be the best for area? I'll mainly be driving during the winter, spring and fall.
I prefer the Mobil One brand. Thanks for the help.

I live in Austin, Texas, where last summer had some 40+ odd days of over 100 degrees, and I used 20/50 weight oil. My temp. gauge would shoot to 210 within about 5 minutes over driving and never dip below that on any given trip. The 20/50 weight is good for that summer heat. But now it's winter here, and I think a thinner weight is a little better, a 15/40 probably, maybe even less. As such, whenever the car's been low on oil the past 3 months, I've replaced it with a thinner weight. Then I'll do a full oil change before summer to the heavy stuff.

Nice looking '72. Any mods? what color is that?
While for an '84 the recommendations below should be valid for our older cars. ![]() thanks 84_Carrera A long but worthwhile read on oil selection is here: Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils. I do not really want to start an oil discussion in this thread but I would be careful with Mobil. As I have stated in several other threads, Mobil makes an acceptable product for later cars but they have played many games with their formulations and currently are not proud enough to publish the current data in their Official Product Data Sheets. I find this very disturbing. Given that our older engines need the Zinc/Phosphorus (ZDDP) additive to protect the camshafts, I would strongly recommend you consider another vendor. But as I also say, your car, your money, your choice.

In Mexico City I use Castrol 20W 50. Our winters are not that cold coldest probably 28 F.
Hottest days 85 F. Also I have a bumper front oil cooler. The engine is a stock 3.2 |

If you don't have a front mounted radiator oil cooler, you're going to want one in arid-zona. Elephant racing makes a nice set-up with finned oil lines.

Hey Guys, I appreciate all the help. I went with 15-50. That should probably be the best for my application.
This is a great website. It's so helpful, especially when I get feedback from like-minded people. Aston, the car is far from ready for track use, but I hope in the next few months, it will be ready for major road use. The car's been in storage for the last five years, but before that, it was mainly a track car. It's seen it's share of laps at Spokane raceway. Damn I miss that track ![]() Thanks once again. Be safe. Krom Quote:
