Intercity Lines - should the driver get a tip?
 

I shipped a car to Virginia and it should arrive there in a couple of days. The person I sold the car to has asked me if it's customary to tip the driver, and how much. I know many of you have done this before, so I'd like your opinions. What do you think?

In my experience, non-passenger carriers usually don't get tipped. Call me cheap, but I don't tip the UPS guy either.

We gave the last crew some home baked goods. A big box of brownies and chocolate chip cookies and some blueberry muffins. They really appreciated it as they get tired of all the junk food available on the road.

For what it is worth, I have tipped home movers. Of course, they did quite a bit of heavy lifting as well as packing. This being said, I would rather have a few broken dishes than any damage to my Porsche. I would tip.

It depends.

Was he on time, courteous and careful? If yes a few bucks could'nt hurt.

I would tip if I were pleased.

I do tip the UPS guy. He is always either at my home or business and I never get any but courteous and helpful service.

The UPS guy appreciates the tip and it shows.

We did when we used them, as the service and the friendliness of the husband and wife team was great!

If I was receiving a car and I can tell the driver is doing everything possible to ensure proper loading or unloading of my baby there is no question I would tip him. It is a Porsche not a Buick and IMHO a tip can be appropriate under the right circumstances.

I gave a tip to the guy at DAS who delivered my car. He was very careful and made sure the car came off the truck unscathed. After spending the thousands on the car and hundreds on delivery, a $20 tip was probably the least I could do.

When my boxster was delivered to me, the battery was dead and only my wife was home. The guy rolled it off the back of the truck into the middle of the street then got back in his truck to leave. She had to ask him to help her push it to the side of the street so it would be safe until I got home to boost it. No tip for that slob.

When I bought a 911 and had it shipped here, I had the seller tip the driver in advance to be extra careful. When he got to my location, he was on time, and called an hour out to say he was on time. He did a nice job getting the car off the trailer and took his time. I tipped him again. $50 when he picked it up, $20 at my end. My rationale was that tipping him at the start of the process would go a long way to ensuring the car would be cared for.

Oh, and I don't tip my UPS guy, but give him a Starbucks gift card a couple times a year. He always makes sure he leaves my packages (often from Pelican) in the corner of my porch where it's protected from rain or snow, rather than just on the front stoop. My USPS mail carrier also gets a Starbucks card a couple times a year too, and she's been great too.

Not quite the same situaltion, but I broke down and needed a tow from B.F., OR, to Bend, OR. The guy was super nice, extra careful, and I drove back the 40 or so miles with him in the rollback. It was pretty obvious that he wasn't making much more than minimum wage; I gave him a couple of twenties, and he was really appreciative. (Then I made sure to call his manager and let him know I was happy with his service.)

I have used Intercity a few times and I had the same husband wife duo twice. Really nice people and their dog too!. I gave em 100 bucks cash both times.

Considering the great job they did in taking care of my car, being courteous/professional, etc. I was happy tipping for their fantastic service.
