3.2 engine serial numbers

Hey wondering if anyone knows where I can find out further information about my engine from the serial number?

Mine starts with 63F?

It's a '85 and I believe the F = '85 and I think the 63 is european possibly?

I'm trying to figure out if I have the higher compression european engine and further information about the all differences from the north american engines?

According to Wayne's book, which I recommend you get, it is an '85 R.o.W, 10.3:1 pistons, 231 hp as compared to U.S.A. 9.5:1, 207 hp.

Hey Feds, is the car ROW as well?

feds 02-20-2010 05:17 PM

Hmmm, thats what I was hoping for (i think). I got wayne's 101 projects, but I haven't seen a listing for engine serial numbers in it, or is there another book?

Yes, I believe it is a ROW car, it has the high side marker lights and cloth seats and non north american lights. It came over from japan, so its either japan spec or from somewhere else and imported there.

I'm in the process of trying to determine exactly what spec it is? and what the differences are in terms of engine, suspension, lights, emissions control devices, others......

Hold on......too much bad info here....

You need the Pocket Tech Spec Books. 10th digit in chassis number... if "F"....signifies 1985. Correct.

Engine numbers run a different pattern. For 1985.... 8 digits
first digit.... 6 ( 6 cylinder engine).
second digit...3= Carrera ROW , 4= Carrera USA or Germany with cat option , 7= Turbo ROW/Canada.
third digit.... F ....1985
fourth thru eighth digit.... serial number.

The engine also shows a "type" number cast someplace else on it, usu on right side vertical fan post--->

930/20 = 911 Carrera ROW with the higher HP.
930/21 = 911 Carrera USA/Japan/ or Germany with cat option M298...lower HP
930/26 = 911 Carrera, Sweden, Switzerland and Australia
930/66= 930 Turbo , ROW and Canada

Anyone know where the engine type number is stamped?

Geronimo '74 02-21-2010 10:18 PM

at the base of the fan, right side, take a small flashlight to see better.

So what does this number mean? It's cast in the bottom of the case. You know where all the oil drips.
I know from the vin that it's a ROW 84 carrera

Casting number on the right side case. 5R match your vintage.
