Checking front wheels bearings

Bentley says to "carefully remove dust caps," but does not say how. I tried prying one off witha screwdriver, and then large pliers. Neither worked. How do you remove these dust caps?

They probably mean to take care not to DESTROY the HUBS while removing the cap ... as even gram-sized charges of C4 or pounding with the BFH until the hubs let go!

Some peop;e have reported success with worm-gear or muffler clamps and prying with crowbar or tire iron. CARE IS THE OPERATIVE WORD ... around those Aluminum Hubs!!!

i use a big, blunted chisel and hammer. there's a rounded notch around the cap. put the chisel against the notch and tap one side then the other until it's off.

I have been useing prybars with great success. The prybars have to have a bend in the end to leverage against the hub. turn the hub and pry opposite sides. If yo go on line to Sears and then Crafstman, or Snap On Tools, you will see the type of pry bar that I am discribing.

Mine wouldn't rock so I took a brass mallet and tapped (ok, smacked) the vice grips and kept rotating the hub.

THE MUFFLER CLAMP IS THE BEST WAY TO GET OFF THAT DUST CAP WITHOUT MANGLING IT IMHO. JUST TAP AROUND THE CAP AND IN 5 MIN TO 30 MIN VOILA.

I just used a large pair of pliers (quite large adjustable ones with the large slit) and a hammer. Clamp on with the pliers and smack the arms of the pliers to rock it back on forth.
That's how my racer buddy showed how to do it.
It worked well and didn't mangle anything.

I do mine like Mr. Walker.
But the new tool of choice seems to be a BIG ASS pair of Channel Locks/slip pliers.

I agree that the muffler clamp is the way to go if you don't want to mark up the cap too much...

Chris.
