Thanks to this forum and lots of knowledgeable people, who recommend synthetic gear oil, instead of swepco 201 for G-50 transmissions ,I replaced the swepco gear oil which I, changed in early January of last month , to Red Line synthetic 75W90NS. I just came back from test drive and I gotta tell you guys,it really made a huge difference in terms of the shifting and how smooth and responsive it is now.I love it! Thanks guys for your info. By the way I drained the swepco directly from the transmission back to its original container(which I bought from our host) ,it has roughly 500-600 miles on it,and I really hate to dump it ,its practically clean as brand new,so if any body wants or could use it for their 915's, let me know, and I'll arrange for local pick up .I live in valley. Cheers!!! 1988 targa.

On my 1977 911s Targa the results were the opposite. I took out Redline and put in Swepco years ago, all for the better. I guess the 915 likes Swepco and the G50 likes Redline?

Yes, Swepco 201 is for the 915 (though now there is a Kendall alternate) and any of the top synthetics for the G50. That's always been the case.

yeah, swepco isn't the best for the G50. I also recently drained the gear oil out of my G50 that the previous owner put in, did it because I felt like the shifting wasn't quite what it should be. When I drained it, it was the characteristic blue of Swepco. Redline is good stuff, I use it in my BMW, Ferrari and others. But I like Mobil 1 Delvac 75W-90 synthetic gear oil for the Porsche G50 even better.

I just run my swepco through a coffee filter paper before re-using

G50's do like synthetic.. I did my research and settled on Castrol Syntec 75w90 for my G50. It was inexpensive, easy to get and had average to very good performance in all areas. I feel it's a good compromise for a road card. It shifts great, I think the PO had put swepco in the G50.

Yeah, thought the jokes would come Peter, swepco has a huge life expectancy in a weekend driver where it's not abused. I'm reliably informed it's quite safe to carefully drain it into a clean container to do whatever works needs be done inside the box, and to put it back in when finished. A coffee filter paper just takes out any fine synchro sludge.

Masis, thanks a million for the "pay forward" gesture! It was nice meeting my first Pelicanite, especially one bearing a gift! Let's definitely get together and ride the Crest Highway when it is re-opened!

What about Swepco 210? Someone recommended it to me for a 915 with a Guard LSD. It may have been Paul Guard that did so.

It's rainy and wet outside today. Question: Is it a "must" to warm up the transmission before I drain off the old fluid?
