My 1984 911 has a loose alternator belt whats the easiest way to tighter on the road? I am stuck on the highway HELP

short version:
there should be a pulley wrench in your tool kit, and box wrench that will loosen the shaft nut.
hold the pulley with the wrench and loosen the nut.
remove one of the spacers from inside the pulley halves and replace it under the pulley hemi washer.
do not overthighten when you assemble, the rotation of the motor will take care of that.

longer version:
keep rotating the pulley as you tighten the nut to insure the belt seats evenly between the pulleys. it's possible to have the pulley cocked and woobly and still seat unevenly on the belt.

that should get you on your way.
I would replace the belt when you get home if it has been slipping enough to get you stranded on the road

What he said PLUS, be sure you have a total of 6 Shims.

These can be either between the pulley halves or between the outer pulley half and the cup shaped spacer.

It's so cool that people can "call" in for info on the road! The belt change drill should be practiced by all owners (at home) just like showing your teen drivers how to change a tire. It's not hard but things can go wrong.
