911r tail light base question

since our host no longer sells them they directed me to tre in my search for 911r tail light housings. while browsing their site i found two different models and was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between them. i called tre directly and whoever answered the phone was no help and told me to call back later, which won't happen. if i am taking the time and money to place a long distance phone call and whoever is in charge of answering the phones can't do their job properly then i won't waste my time again. (ya this may seem a little petty but it is a pet peeve of mine - if you can't hire someone who can do their job properly it reflects badly on your company and usually i buy from someone else)


version 1, cost $150

The 911R (and a few 911ST) models used these lamp bases in the effort to pare weight wherever possible. These tailamp bases are for the individual that may already have their own lamps or wish to customize these parts further. Featured elsewhere in this catalog are complete sets with lamps and bulbs. Molded from fiberglass with reinforced mounting areas, these bases are made to fit the 1969-89 911 and 912 models. With a little trimming, they will easily fit the 1965-68 short wheel base cars. version 2, cost $170.

The bare fiberglass bases for your own lamps. Comes with special stand off pieces for easing the installation.







neither comes with bulbs or lenses, both are made from fiberglass, they both fit the same model years yet the one with the light housings precut costs less than the one that would require me to do my own cutting. it just seems backwards to me.

The precut ones are for people who take the lights apart and then sandwich the housing between the base and the lense. This means only the lenses is visible. The other is for people who want to screw the whole lense assembly to the housing, this exposes the base frame. Why they cost differently? Probably they were made in different runs.

actually after 4 calls i finally got a hold of dave at tre and he told me both pieces are exactly the same it was just an error on the web site programming. they cost $150 per pair and they can pre-cut the openings if you want them to or not. the complete kit (bases, bulbs, housings) is down to $325 now as well.

as a side note, the tre fiberglass parts fit great, the rennspeed ones are awful.
