First venture into transmission,first view

My project is to hopefully correct a small challenge I have with first and second before it starts to make any funny noises and get out. Its an 85 with 60k and otherwise shifts perfect. Two new sincros and a slider. I started this afternoon with the nose cover and discovered a two inch shiny spot inside the cover that has the same line pattern as the top of fifth gear. I dont see any damage to the top of fifth but what could have caused this and is it just the start of something? Also I noticed a retaining pin sticking out of the selector fork, is that for the reverse light?? Any thoughts on the scrape would be helpful. Thanks Doughttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1267412721.jpg

Doug, the roll pin activates the reverse light switch (915 Tutorial Part 8). I'm pretty sure that your machined surface is done to provide clearance, before initial assembly at the factory. I've seen that before, and have never found evidence of contact wear.

Thanks Peter Its funny that it has the matching circular groove pattern as the top of second gear, however your answer sounds great (a relief) to me. I'm using your guide but missed the pin remarks , thought I found it just in time!!! I will move forward into the next section tonight. thanks Doug
