first gear removal, some input required

So far so good, now looking at the first /second shaft that contains the first ,second syncros and slider I need to replace. I'm using Peters tutorial however it requires some adjustment in procedure because I don't want to remove the shafts. A note from John Walker suggested that this is possible. It seems that the top roller bearing and first gear need to be pulled with a gear puller first . Am I on the right track here, any input would be helpful, thanks Doug

See my current post and Peter's response which I think is relevant:

Transmission problem - kicks out of 1st

Peter Zimmerman's response re: 1st/2nd synchros:

"To do only first and second synchro rings, and a new slider, requires minimal dis-assembly. Remove the center housing, and there are 1st and 2nd, right at the end of the pinion shaft. They can be removed with a puller (necessary because the bearing next to first speed will be tight on the shaft).

This is probably not the best method to consider, and you can't evaluate the pinion bearing/diff housing condition, but if all of the gear set teeth look good it will probably get you about 50K + miles of good motoring.

you don't really need a puller. the mainshaft bearing inner race can be seen between the gear teeth below it, so a carefully placed punch or screwdriver blade can be inserted against the race and tapped with a hammer. they come off pretty easily.
the pinion bearing sits on a thrust washer and the gear under the washer has a couple of notches in it where you can poke in a smaller screwdriver blade and run it in with a hammer. that will lift the bearing up enough to get a couple of LONG prybars UNDER the washer. one on each side. lever them off the gear to further move the bearing out. it's tighter than the other one, but you'll get it. then first gear will slide off. measure where the brass fork sits on the shaft, (not that it's adjusted correctly. maybe yes, maybe no), remove the fork bolt and tap the fork off the shaft. then 2nd slides off. it's a good idea to do both 1st and 2nd syncros, syncro teeth, shift sleeve and brake bands, rather than partially rebuild the 1st/2nd assembly.
