I don't want to start any in-fighting here but what is the best auto-x tire for 911?
What's the best auto-x tire?
If 1st choice is a DOT-R tire then what would be a good alternative if I want the best street and auto-x tire. I am interested in both types. Thanks. |

If you want to be competitive at autocross you need either the Hoosier or Kumho competition "R" tire. This assumes you are going to stay in a class that requires DOT rubber.
These are not particularly good as street tires because they wear fast and have very little in terms of rain grooves. If you try to compromise and go for an all purpose tire it is not going to be good at the upper levels of competition. Look what everyone else is running at your local autocross.

I am only aware of one true "autocross" tire on the market at the moment: the Hoosier A3S03.
It is evidently a fabulous tire, but its lifetime is counted in events/days...around $165+ a pop, each. Beyond that, one of the softer DOT-R road-race compound tires would be a good choice, like the Kumho Victoracer V700. The harder -R tires with more substantial rain grooving, such as the Yoko A032R or Toyo Proxes, would give up a lot to a Hoosier or Kumho in autox use. They just can't get hot enough in a traditional "go-1 lap-stop 'n wait" autocross environment.
