89 Targa G50 w/ transmission "issues"...

OK, this will sound painful I'm sure...however I purchased an '89 911 Targa with some good "road miles" (150k) on it recently and I'm now going thru the various things that need to be attended to as spring is nearly upon us in the midwest. One thing in particular that I noticed (at time of purchase and now) is that when full depressed, the clutch tends to "bottom out" and give a very harsh grinding noise....as if it's not able to engage or somehow has gone "too far". Shifting from one gear to the next is fairly smooth...although reverse & 1st are tough to get into any any point regardless. Previous owner indicated that he had a new clutch installed last summer and had only put 1,000 miles on it since.....perhaps it wasn't the proper part ? or maybe just a simple adjustment ?

I've been thru the entire trans-rebuild process, so I'm fully prepared for what I may receive in terms of feedback from the group.....however keeping my fingers crossed that it's simply an "adjustment" to the clutch/flywheel assembly and that I (or the PO) have not chewed up too many of the teeth beyond salvage.....don't want to go in for $4k again !

Any suggestions from the crowd ? I'm getting ready to take it into my Porsche Master-Tech here in Ohio, but thought i'd run this one by the forum first to see what I might come up with.

Thanks in advance....
Brian

Do you have a receipt that verifies the clutch was actually replaced? All parts (plate, disc & t/o bearing)?

Have you bled the clutch hydraulics?

Has the clutch arm had the factory update?

Good questions......no paperwork, however PO is very solid so I'm going to ask for that info. I'll also check on bleeding & not sure what the factory update was for the '89 on the clutch arm....perhaps that's the issue.

Good point on the update, not really sure when that became a production item.

My particular car was produced in March 1989......assuming production runs on the '89 Carrera 3.2, as it was the last of it's kind were not that long into the selling year.....which could mean that the update had already been handled by the factory.

I'm going with a WAG on this one, try bleeding the clutch master cylinder.
