Does anyone else have an SC with the antenna on the left just to the rear of the petrol fill hatch?? I have looked at many pictures and images and have never seen another mounted like this except a local older 2.4 litre coupe. I am vexed. Please can someone assure me I am not alone and WHY IS THE ANTENNA ON THE LEFT??
I'm also considering putting a plug in the hole and throwing the antenna inside the front boot. I think it ruins the body lines. ![]() |

I have the exact same car (ROW 1978SC targa) and it too has the antenna on the left side.
You see only the really fast 911s have the antenna on the left. It has to do with aerodynamics. I could explain but, somethings are just best kept secret ![]()

78 SC coupe - the 72nd one built as a matter of fact. Antenna is on the left, no right side mirror. I've noticed most other SC have the antenna on the right as well.

This doesn't really fit, but my '67 911 has an antenna on the left front fender. lol. That's my 2 cents.

Hello
Simple: FFF Generaly the mecahnical antenna is on the driver side so you just roll down the window to telescope it in or out. Also if you get out from the car you don´t need to run on the oppesite side to put the areal in. And most bad people kinking areals are on the boardwalk and not on the street. The mechnicall antenna sits inside the space between A-pillar abd door. The electric Antenna will not fit with the fuelflap and so they went to the other side. ( Well that tradition startet with the 356 but they had the fuelerflap on the wrong side like the 9X6 today ) Grüsse |

Roland, if the Porsche engineers' idea was that I should be able to reach out the window and extend the manual antenna, those guys must've been half orangutan. Then again, that seems in line with the rest of the ergonomic design of the vehicle.

On my '78 SC Euro: driver's side as well. I was told this was a European placement, as the other models have a passenger location. No support for this theory yet. I like Roland's explanation, as it does make sense now that I have raised and lowered the thing a few times.
What about the antenna in the window glass as a model option or update? The PO of my car had this type of windshield installed as he didn't like the look of the mast either. However, I've not been using the built-in antenna as I have not found the lead wires yet. Any suggestions? What about Seadweller: he has a '78 Euro SC down in FL?

Hello
Roland, if the Porsche engineers' idea was that I should be able to reach out the window and extend the manual antenna, those guys must've been half orangutan. Then again, that seems in line with the rest of the ergonomic design of the vehicle. No they are not interesstet that drivers could reach the antenna from the driver position. If you open the door and strecj your arm you can pull it but not enough to full errect the arreal. It is just so that if you reach the car you just pull the arreal up and then open the door. If the areal would be on a other place you had to make more steps. yet we all know that you have to check all tires for air before you move the car and your first step in the car ist to check if the brake has pressure, the mirrors fit,.... I never had problems with Porsche ergonomics despite the radio "far out". So you can Call me a Orang Utan. Porsche ergonomics where a bit different to other car manufactorers. Today you can sit in every car and drive if you don´t touch the million buttons spread around doing useless things for people who like to sit in cars then rather driving them. Try to get a testride in the new BMW 7 series and you will never sit into a normal car again. Next year they maybe deliver the robodiversystem. The window antennas came in the mid 70´s ( as 930 special ) and wher stock on all 85 on 3,2 911 yet you always could order normal or automatic areals. The window antennas are a bit directional and not to responsive on othe bands then FM. The antennas have a amplifier siting in the right outher corner under the windshieldcowl. From there goes a wire behind the radi. One is the antenna wire the other power suppley. Grüsse |
