What kind of engine do I have?
 

Does anyone know what the engine number: 692 101 102 00 1200 goes to? (what type of engine is it and how do I find this out? I have a picture if needed. I have this engine. I think it is a porsche. Looks like a Porsche, but a further back pic would help. Almost looks like an early sandcast 911 engine with old, old oil return tubes.

356 engine? Date stamp 40/64 was a time when they may have
still been casting a few. More pictures please. Maybe a really
early 912 engine.

Is this picture better? Would other numbers on the Engine help? Also can Engines be rebuilt and make the numbers on the engine something that it is not?

A picture of the whole engine would more likely get an answer. Are what looks like the push rod tubes stacked one above the other? Please post a picture of the complete engine

You have a Porsche Carrera 4 cam engine. Probably one of the most revered engines of all time.

Even non Porsche guys have to catch there breath when they see one in the real life.
There are maybe half a dozen guys in the world that can rebuild these competently... Read - Rare and Expensive.

I seriously am trying to find out information on this Engine. I have been told various things that are mixed up...from numerous people from it's junk to it's incredibly valuable. It's not junk to me.

Are you serious? That engine is probably worth more than the car your driving.
You need to do some research and start making phone calls to the few specialists left.

That is indeed a rare and valuable engine. With a 64 date code it is probably one of the last of the engines , and might be 2.0 L displacement. You need to find the serial # on it. I'll try and do some digging as to location.

BTW, euro911sc was just pulling your leg. Sometimes we get guys starting threads that are just trying to get us going on about something rare and valuable, then it turns out be be just a joke. So they will try to tease.

I want to apologize for the rude ‘junk’ comments.
That was inappropriate.
This is a VERY valuable engine.

The 692 engines were 1500 and 1600 cc “Carrera 4-cam” engines from the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.
They were originally delivered in 356A and 356B (T5) Carrera GS and Carrera GT and a few of the RSK, RS-60/61 Spyders and the Abarth Carrera (GTL).

The 692/0 still had the Hirth roller-bearing crankshaft but the 692 series was best noted for using plain bearings for the first time (692/1). The really ‘hot’ version is the legendary 692/3A.

Some research will get you all the details.

There are others on the Forum who are 4-cam knowledgeable, many far more than I.

At one point I owned more than 1% of all the 4-cylinder, 4-cam engines. Yes, I have completely rebuilt them and taught others the skill.

I just met with a friend (now 88) who raced these in a 550A in the late 50’s. I am going to get his commentary on this photo collection from those years.


What do you intend to do with the engine?
What do you know of its history?
Where are you located?
Does the engine turn by hand? (if not easy, STOP.)

For an engine like this, Porsche AG might trade you a new GT3RS. Yes, it is VERY valuable.

No Joke...I'm trying to find the History of the Engine. Getting mixed responses as expected.

Then why not ask in any of the 356 forums? Why did you stage it for the photo?

Grady and others are right on how valuable this 4-cam engine is. If you reveal the type # Grady will be able to tell you what you have. Great find if it's for real. Thanks for sharing.

The “12 60” number is the casting date.
Porsche casting suppliers typically use the
“week/year” format so that could be
week 12 of 1960, 21 March 1960 to 25 March 1960.

692.101.102.00 is the engine casting number.
In this era, I suspect it is the same as the part number.

The "10,61" may be the date built or possibly rebuilt.
October 1961.

Please post more pictures of the complete engine from
all sides and details of everything.

We can tell a lot from good images.

This sale of this motor would fund a good portion of your retirement.

Grady as always is being an outstanding statesman for the community, but I have to say that the lack of information you have provided leaves the community skeptical. Either this is a complete hoax or you have just lucked into something special.

More information has been requested frequently, but no response - a great one would be - how the heck did you end up with a 4 cam motor and have no idea what it is?

We all would love to have a real life "heh guys look what was in my neighbors garage who died and he left it to me" story on Pelican, but at this point given the amount of information provided to you by the forum, it is only polite to reciprocate and tell the story.

That's exactly where I'm at - very, very skeptical. No one who just "finds" an unidentified motor goes to a car forum asking what it is and only posts pics of casting numbers. A genuine "gee guys, what is it?" question, honestly looking for answers, would undoubtedly start off with pictures of the whole darn thing. Not some kind of teaser. Our collective chain is being yanked. That's not very nice.
