eBay: 356; Just a lot of surface rust
I must admit I pass over probably hundreds of eBay listings before certain listings make my personal cut to see the Pelican BBS.
I liked this listing because of this quote: "1960 Porsche 356 coupe body only, no engine or transmission. Excellent for vintage race car or some kind of modified street, mid-engine Toyota twin-cam drive train for example." Also this claim was interesting considering the picture below: "Lot of surface type rust but body is basically solid with some patching needed but not panel replacement." IMO, it's kind of like saying that the herpes is just a 'skin rash'. Last edited by kstar; 11-24-2001 at 10:48 PM.. |

Hmmmmm, lets see. A couple of hundred bucks for surface finishing and repainting, a new engine and tranny - and you've got yourself a real classic there. What a bargain fixer-upper!

You guys don't understand the will of 356 enthusiasts.
Restoring that little beauty would be no problem for the likes of Brett Johnson, Vic Skirmants, or Gary Emory, to name just a few.

The British cars in the background of the pictures look like they were taken better care of than this poor 356.

Why a mid engine twin cam Toyota, when there's such thing as a twin cam flat six 911 engine? A mid engine 356/6...if money was no object. And, if there really is enough of the tub left to build on...

I'm envisioning this 356 carcass as the beginnings of a great home entertainment system in my family room! Just add a seat, mount a wide-screen monitor in the windshield frame, jury-rig some kind of computer steering wheel/accelerator/brake system, install some sort of demolition derby software and .......

Hello
Very solid car, many good parts and also a new rear torsion tube. The rust isn´t very major we restored much worser Coupes yet they had been S90 or Carreras. ( Higher end value ) It looks like a real bargain if you need body parts or a body to build up for race events. It will not pay out if you don´t have a parts car to fill in the missing parts. And good 356´s are very cheap in the US. ( if you don´t get fixed on good mechanic condition ) Not a project for a typical american mechanic ( or is that mexican style ? ) Grüsse |

The rust does not look too bad, but everything else is missing!

You guys are missing the true point.
This is the rare neglectors edition 356 OK so the neglected 356s ore not all the rare. Honestly I have a 57 356 in my garage that need repair of rust in all the normal places(pans, battery box, fender fronts) and for the metal work alone it will cost me around 5G for these repairs. I would say that if someone was going to buy something it should at least have alll the parts or at least some of the parts. Tracking down all the parts for this will probably run you another 5G. It would be better to find a parts car to use and throw that one away, although it is nice to see these cars totally restored from this point. ![]() Regards, Kelly Last edited by echocanyons; 11-26-2001 at 07:54 AM.. |

The seller says that it would be good for vintage racing. Absolutely. The body doesn't look half bad. There are a lot of parts missing, but the car is usable. Slap in a 912 motor, 356 tranny, a couple of seats, wheels and your set. Well, maybe not quite, but if you want a restoration project and have a lot of 356 parts, it might actually be a good deal IMHO.

Hello
Marketing this car isn´t easy. This thing is defenitly something for someone with good skills and a warehouse on hand. From my view the car will be splitet into usable parts or someone use it to restore a rarer Body ( by swaping some numbers and parts plus drilling more holes ) Making a race car from it is possible like restoring it to new pristine but will cost to much for normal people. But the fact is this car body is maybe much better in condition then many bondo "restored" still driving and waiting for a guy to trap in ( Germans are so naive if they buy Cars in the US or the mexicans are true artist in working in that art form ) Grüsse |

The poor thing just needs a few parts and a little elbow grease. Well, maybe more than a little elbow grease. However, the lucky bidder might want to contact me about the parts from a rusty "B" coupe that I dismantled some years ago. No trans, no w/s, no combo gauge, and fuel tank very rusty. Great project for a younger enthusiast.
