Need tech info for custom made CDI for my MFI

Hi everybody, 2 weeks ago my universal (and hated) CDI finally died and has been looking for a replacement for it since then.

Here my mechanic recommend me to convert the dizzy to a pointless system, as well installing a new CDI.

My question is if anybody has information about the original bosch CDI, so i can match the techincal data on the new CDI so it will be as similiar as possible to the original one, and what about the pointless system installation??

Also, buying a new coil, any recommendation on it? i mean, solid, in oil, covered with epoxy.

Note: The CDI i am buying is programmable, so i can program the parameteres like RPM limit before buying it. Also i am not buying MSD or permatune, remember i live across the continent and here we have a lot of good national stuff.

Thanksss

Ariel

Here's a good thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/226517-history-bosch-cdi-toubleshooting-info-parts-list-changes-schematics.html

thanks flieger, that's a lot of information, but it's most technical for building or repairing than to make a comptaible unit i think, hahaha

thanks anyway, maybe my mechanic will use it.

any other with specific data to make a compatible unit?

I am using Pertronix point conversion kit and it is great. Not sure if you can get it there. Works well with stock Bosch unit. I believe the output is 12vdc with a square wave pattern. That is pretty industry standard.

i am not sure what you are asking for.
the bosch unit did not do anything special, no different spark duration at different RPM's, it did not change the timing, it just produced a 450v pulse to a coil that stepped it up, about 100 times, ouch, that really hurts BTW. so unless your new one can be programed to change the timing, or, you have a race motor, you can not do any better than a bosch or MSD. i went to MSD because of cost. to me, it is just as reliable and i cant tell the difference, except that my car now runs, plus, if the MSD ever breaks, i can walk into any speed shop and buy another one.

What i am looking for is the output parametres of the bosch CDS so i can clone it.

It's not for racing, it's just to replace my actual CD box (burned and very bad) with a new one, the most similar possible to the original bosch so i can have all the parametres of the ignirion right according to porsche, and can follow step by step the CMA.

Have yoiu looked at the Daytona Sensors CD-1? Maybe that is the one you are considering.

Daytona Sensors LLC - CD-1 Capacitive Discharge Ignition System for Racing

Pretty interesting unit. Have not used one. This is a new product.

you mean, that any CD that can output a 450v pulse will work right with the system?

Just get a rebuilt one. Try Ingo at 3.6@cox.net

you are trying to re invent the wheel.
why go to the trouble to build something that does what is already out there. if you are going to build something, build soemthing that puts out more voltage, or can make a longer spark

pszemia 03-27-2010 07:22 AM

what i am trying is to get all the possible info from the original CDI, and buy locally a similiar one, because the original one was taken out from the car..
