What does a bad syncro look like?
 

Is it reduced thickness, any other problems other than obvious chips ect that require them to be replaced. Other than small groves about 1/4 from end inside I don't see anything wrong?? Possibly this small piece having to much clearence? your input appreciated. I am also showing a pic of #2 dog gear that looks ok to me???http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1268023400.jpg

the outer surface is what you need to look at. any areas that have the friction surface worn away and look shiney, chunks out of the surface, grooves, etc. look at the rest of them too. replace the 2nd dog teeth, because they're old and can do what 1st did any time.

Does the way that the small piece fits into the band ,with what seems to be excessive clearance compared to the fit in first ,indicate wear on those parts as well? I was surprised by your response John that the #2 dog is worn as it looks like good point tops but I am no expert and will go with your advice. I will reread your tutorial on that subject, thanks Peter

No, the block/band clearance will be OK, unless you see tearing or obvious problems on the contact surfaces. Judging dog teeth condition goes beyond the visual. Wear can exist on the ID of the tooth ring, which will allow your new synchro to expand too far and exceed installed spec. In that case, if you re-use the dog teeth you can end up with crappy (stiff) shifting until the new slider wears away the friction surface on the new synchro ring, which will shorten synchro life dramatically.
