Last night (Saturday night) after all the changes Wayne made, I still got slow loading (+30 secs.) to the site, slow loading when going from one forum to the other, page hang ups, and freezing up when submitting thread replies. I am in So Cal with my home provider and the problems were only with Pelican and they were erratic--that's the frustrating part.

This morning (Sunday, 9:00 PDT) things are lightning fast with no problems! My post is just to inform that things are all good, and hoping they remain that way.

I just replaced the firewall with a bit beefier one. The forums were down for a few minutes, as I had a configuration setting on the new one that was not compatible with the old one. I think this should solve all the problems from this point on.

Very slow connections again this morning. 8:04AM EDT. I am at a client location, sitting on a 20Mb pipe and it is taking 30+ seconds for a connection. Same thing for a search.

I have had issues w/the forum during the last few days as well. Often I will be zipping along fine for a few minutes and then it will suddenly slow to a crawl - becoming basically too slow to be usable. Sometimes quitting and restarting my browser will make it better, sometimes not. This happens only w/the Pelican Forum's site for me (as far as I can tell).

I got the same thing this AM, no trouble on the forums I haunt, but this one had long load times.

Same here, very slow when switching between threads or opening up bookmarked page - sometimes so slow I give up.

A test search for this thread took 45 seconds.

Edit:

The posting of this reply took 30 seconds or so to load, then did not show up like it loaded until I refreshed the screen.

Slooooow.

Also, I've just started getting PM's meant for other people; don't know how that could happen.

Same here! The biggest PITA is the inconsistency. This reply to quote took 30 seconds to open the reply box. Others I've done today open immediately. Sorry Wayne, I'm not really complaining, I'm just passing on information that may help solve a problem.

Jerome74911S 03-19-2010 09:52 AM

Still inconsistent

I'm afraid it really is hanging today - but not always. That's the odd part. Anyway, when it works it's nice and fast, but when it hangs it is quite aggravating.

Seems super fast right now, I'll keep an eye on it.

I just quickly reset the two servers, we'll see if that makes a difference. I saw a slowdown potentially in the database server for a few minutes there.

Here in s. florida on comcast broadband with a fast computer pelican parts is by far the slowest loading website i visit and now it's the slowest it's ever been. sometimes it seems completely offline.

Because I visit frequently I would be all for you trashing the current problematic server completely and just buy all new servers and hardware, or rent some, and charge people to visit the site or something if thats what it takes..

I visit many free websites including some on nearly 3rd world network54 that probably use an old radio shack tandy tape recorder sitting on a hot water heater in someones basement closet working as a server and they are way faster than this one.

I fully say I thank you for this website... it's just ridiculously slow at times.

Wayne,
It has been intermittently slow this week.

Love the site. Not complaining, just providing a user report.

Thanks,
Dick Lague

I'm just not seeing the same problems that you guys are, and I'm watching the stats from my house, so I'm not on an internal network or anything. Occasionally, a database query bogs down for a moment and slows things down, but that's not a common occurrence. I have the server logs here to show the requests that are coming in and the ones that are dished out, and any and all delays. There has been no change to the server configurations recently (except the firewall). I will keep looking at it...

Back on today @ 6pm PDT--no hanging and all running fast and smooth. Thanks Wayne.

Halm 03-20-2010 04:04 PM

Agreed. Browsing is terrific. Thanks Wayne.

I found a setting that was accidentally turned on that meant that template names were being sent with the pages. This added about 4% more text to the page. Nothing to write home about, but every little bit counts.

Wayne,
Since you reset the server the speed has been fine for me. It went from slow to faster than most sites.
Thanks.

widgeon13 03-21-2010 06:05 AM

I have no problems with the site, never have and certainly don't want to have to pay for an incremental increase in speed.

Any speed issues I have are more associated with my provider and my geographical location that PP server.
