From 2.20 to 2.27 m wheelbase : is there a window frame difference??
 

Hi everyone,

Here's a tricky one :

My 911t (1970) do not to seems have original doors and window chromed frames.

To say that, I've got the two rectangular holes for electric window switches and (that's my problem) both windows frames on not fitting well into the upper door space : see picture).


After many hours of attempts to adjust the angles, I still have spaces at both places (about 1/2 inch) and direct abrasion of frame at the top of triangle window.

My question is then : Is there two diffrent types of window door frames for the 911 : one pre-1969 on short wheelbase and one for post 1969 2.27 meters wheelbase lenght???

To my knowledge and my mechanics point of view, my car main frame is in very good shape (floor pannel is new from couple years so the car frame is not twisted).

I bolted up the frames so that the bolts were firm but not tight, I then gently closed the door and adjusted the alignment by wiggling the frames into place, (lots of opening and closing).

I also replaced all the felt guides and rubber, which might be your problem if you haven't done that yet. The rubber felt guides get worn (the grooves that support the window as it rolls up in down) and that space creates gaps.

No, to answer your question, there is no difference in windows from short wheelbase to long wheelbase cars.

I may then need to look for other possible solutions to my mysterious problem.

If I adjust the window frames correctly to avoid spaces and frame grinding every time I open/close the doors, then the window gets stuck there (I can hardly open it for more then 2 inches down...)

I'm not an expert, but here's how I did it. First, I installed the frames in the door, with the glass loosely fitted, but definitely in the track. Then I really carefully adjusted the window frame position. Please note that the frames are adjusted in three dimensions - there's a depth adjuster that determines how tightly the frame compresses the seal. Adjust the frame until you are happy with the way it fits.

Then you work on the window. Loosely attach the window to the regulator until you have it perfectly positioned. This is a really good opportunity to clean, degrease, and re-lubricate the regulator. Chances are good that your pivot pins need replacing, and the springs might have failed as well. Anyway, if you do it in that order, and also perform a maintenance on the regulator assembly, everything should work and feel like new. Mine does, and if I can do it, anybody can.
