Steering wheel re-covering question

I have two steering wheels for my car (84 911 Targa). One is the original 3 spoke. One is the wheel found on the 86-89 cars. The 3 spoke is in awful condition - leather looks really bad, lots of cracks and chunks of wheel missing. The later wheel looks better but rough - very worn leather on the top of the wheel - between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. I'm thinking of having one or both recovered. Who have people used and had good or bad experiences with?

Thanks,

Ken

I sent mine to Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. It will be in my hands tomorrow, so I'll let you know what it looks like and what they are like if there is a problem. Not inexpensive.

Recovering your steering wheel is a doable home project. I think I payed $35 for the kit from our host. Add the Porsche crest and you have one fine looking stock steering wheel.

I used Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. I had my three spoke "extra thick" wrapped. Looks identical to a new three spoke wheel but feels great, like a more modern wheel. Very fast turn around.

Dallas Custom Steering Wheel

I got my wheel back from Dallas Custom today. I emailed a question about a detail of the finish and got an almost instant reply. They explained that the covering they did is to original Porsche spec, but if I wanted it different they would do it over, no problem. The color match is perfect, and the workmanship very good. But, as I said earlier, not cheap. The DIY version above is sort of okay, but the Dallas job is OEM spec and appearance.

Jerome -

If you don't mind - how much Dallas cost you? The reason I ask is that I got a quote from someone else, and it was $250.

Also - I thought GAHH did this kind of work? Anyone use them lately?

Thanks,

Ken

Dallas Custom Steering Wheel price

Ken,

I don't know if the price I paid is the same as someone would pay for a "standard" color, but I ordered a precise color match to a sample of the car's interior (I found a tiny corner I could cut off), so this might have had an effect. The match to my car's 36 year old interior color is EXACT. Perfect match to sample. Anyway, the price was $279. Not cheap, as I said, but I don't think you can beat the quality.

Thanks Jerome.

Seems like it is in the neighborhood. Dallas also has an e-bay store where they have some 3 spoke wheels for sale for between $250 and $300, so I'd say you didn't pay too much of a premium.

Thanks again for the help.

Ken

Run a heat gun over the leather where it is not tight and it will shrink right up and look perfect. Leather acts just like heat shrink tubing. This is the key to the OEM look.

You could always try this approach: So, what do women's boots and steering wheels have in common?
