Idle Problem Fixed
After trying a number of solutions to fix an idle problem on my 3.2, I am pleased to say it is finally resolved.
The problems were: 1. Sometimes the engine would cut out when cold, returning to idle. 2. Inconsistent (hunting) idle when warm. 3. Various idle speeds between 600 and 1200rpm. Many things have been tried to rectify the issues but today ******** Hamilton's in Sydney found a faulty idle microswitch. The switch fails about 1 in 15 activations - hence why it wasn't spotted sooner. Grant suggests he has replaced 2 in the past 10 years. Additionally, the mixture was too rich and one of the ball joints in the throttle linkage was stuck causing the occasional sticky throttle. I hope this helps some of the others who have experienced similar problems.SmileWavy |
Thanks for your update. I have been suffering the same problem and my symptoms are identical to yours. My idle surged but adjusting the mixture helped. Its still very tempermental. The key thing is that the tach goes to zero then bounces up! Was this related to your micro switch?

Bob,
The tacho still bounces to a low value but not as low as it did previously and then retuns to 850 rpm. Also all the elecrical connectors and earths have been cleaned. It is such a different car now not having to worry about idle. Good luck |
