1986 Carerra Odometer

Hi All,
For some reason my 86 Carrera's ODOMETER stopped working.. What could be the problem? I have not driven the car for a long time. Speedometer is working just fine.

Thanks in advance...
Mauricir

There is an excellent post by Thrasher on this site.

However, if you chose to remove the needle, it must be done very, very carefully,
as a broken needle shaft will cost you $$$$$.

After reading most of the posts, I chose to have the repair performed at a shop.

$120.00 including the odometer gear.

Check other posts.

Good luck,

Gerry

Pull the speedo out of the hole and see if any wires at the back are disconnected...

+1 on the broken odo gears - they are fragile plastic.

I have found the definitiave way to avoid breaking the gears, because even careful pressing on the reset pin with the car not moving at all will still break them:

After my second set of gears went in, I have not pressed the reset once in over 100k miles and my odo still works!

Hope this helps,

+2 on the broken odo gears. They get brittle with age. I send mine to North Hollywood Speedo to be repaired.

NH tech confirmed this odo reset notion being the cuprit of the failure to be that of mythology. There may exist a relational failure yet it's not said to be the actual "cause" of the odo failure (breaking teeth)......

Just an FYI.

In my odo the gear has completely disintegrated. I replaced it as I was in there to put in white faceplate (flame suit on!).
But I never had any issue with breaking an odo on any of my former vehicles by pressing the rest button while at a stand-still.
