911SC noise when turning sharp
I have an 82SC with ~45K miles. When turning slow and sharp to enter my garage I noticed a strange noise. It is not from the transmission or engine, but rather seems to be a suspension or wheel component. When driving straight or with a slight turn it is not there. No recent work done on the car, no new tires etc. The sound is hard to describe. Not a squeak but rather like a dragging noise, almost a clunking noise. Like the car is grumbling about turning so sharp.
Any ideas of how to diagnose this would be appreciated. |
remove your front wheels or at least try look around them at your fenderwells for evidence of the tire rubbing the tub. Not a big deal as it occurs on alot ofthese cars.
Your suspension may have settled over the years and is allowing this. If you don't find this to be the issue, then I would look at your brakes and wheel bearings as the possible culprit. Let us know your findings, please. |
yeah had that. took forever to figure that one out. When turning full lock (R or L) I would get the rumble and like a skipping of the wheels. Caused by the brake disk deflecting contacting the brake pads locking up the wheel for a short time. Adjusted the wheel bearings and it went away. It only did this at very slow speeds. Not much clearance between the pads and the rotor and with loose bearings it was getting cocked due to side loading. That's my best guess, but it worked and it was free!

Front end noise
Had the exact same issue, a funny kind of sound I couldn't put my finger on.
It ended up that my tire was rubbing the stone protector on the Carrera cooler when at its most acute angle. A few minutes and a slight adjustment to the cooler mounts and no more noise. If you have the upgraded cooler take a look - Dennis |
Good point Mountain, I had no cooler and no wear marks on any wheel well things.
Any aftermarket coolers in your car TJK? |
Thanks for the tips.
James - I think you may have nailed it - your description of the symptoms is what I experience - like the wheels are skipping or rubbing as opposed to turning smoothly, not rubbing on the car but rather on the road surface. However, I do have a front oil cooler, so that is a good place to look too as suggested by Mountainman. But, I don't get the sense it is a rub on the car. Imagine the feeling you would get if you got hooked up to be dragged up onto a flatbed and the wheel is locked hard left. The feeling of being dragged slowly ahead when the wheels are not pointing straight ahead - that is kind of how it feels (or at least how I imagine the tow would feel!) I'll have to see if it happens when I turn right too, so far I only know that it happens turning left, whether forward or reverse. |
One other thought:
Check your tires for odd wear patterns. If they are not rubbing the tub, they may be wearing funny and you can feel it at the low speed. |
Thanks Wayne.
I do not think it is the tires, but am overdue to replace them so will see if that makes a difference - current tires have tread left but are >10 yrs old (low mileage). Any suggestions on tires? I have 8" front and 9" rear and the only decent tire I can find in the correct size seems to be Toyo T1R. Any thoughts on these? |
I take it you're running 245/45 in the rear on the 9's.
Sumitomo makes a great tire which can be found in that size but you might have to special order. Here's a great thread on tires that has more info than I could try to write:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/510252-toyo-proxes-t1r-anyone.html Here's the entire search result, just in case you have nothing to do today. ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/search.php?searchid=5058757&pp=25&page=2 |
