Computer Module repair
 

Hi Everyone,

After driving my recently purchased 1999 911C with the check engine light on for the past couple months(Seller convinced me it was O2 sensor), I had local dealer run a diag. Sure enough, not the O2 sensor! Dealer suspects faulty ECM. Porsce wants $5000!
Has anyone had their ECM successfully repaired? I see a few repair/refurb services online- most in FLDA area - they charge around $500 to repair. A little nervous about mailing my cars brain away but maybe worth a shot...

Find a different mechanic. I doubt he pulled a code that says ECU is dead.

The 996 board might be more help.

There have been several posts on this subject.

One of the primary failure modes on these unit is a cold or defective solder joint.

He has a 99 with OBD II. It should tell him exactly what is wrong.

The 996 board may have members with more BTDT experience. He doesn't even know what the code is just $5000.

I took the car in with a p1531 (Camshaft Adjustment Bank 1 Short To Short), p1123 (Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Range 1 (Cylinder 1 - 3), Lean Limit), and p1125 (Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Range 1 (Cylinder 4 - 6), Lean Limit).

They isolated all the involved components and claim they don't see the computer sending adjustment messages so supect it's shot.
I'm going to call some other garages this week to get 2nd opinion and hopefully find someone local who can test and if necessary repair ECMs. Should be an interesting project - no damn way I'm paying Porsche 5k for a new one!!!

Will let all know how it turns out.

Again I suggest you go to the 996 section and ask there. Also from reading off topic I hear the the dreaded RL may have a good, active 996 section.

I don't have one of those. I have a 88 g50 cab with LSD and 16" Fuchs, the best production Porsche ever made.
