I have a really stupid question. Just what is the purpose of that door lock knob that sits on the top of the door trim on my '80 targa? You already have the round knob on the side of the door panel which can be used to lock/unlock the door, so why the redundancy? The main reason I ask this is the PO had the door trim redone so the top door know no longer functions properly. You now have to leave the rubber knob removed from the locking linkage, because with it installed, the knob bottoms out on the trim ring around the hole before the door actually locks. What a weird design. I've had the lock knobs removed the entire time I've had the car. Someone obviously used grommets with too small of an inner diameter to prevent full travel of the locking linkage with the knob installed.

Ah, a design intent question.
Certainly the locking and unlocking functions work fine using just the knob. However, by having the button you have a visual indication as to the state of the lock. ------------------ '81 Platinum Metalic SC Coupe |

Hello
The lock knobs are done to indicate a open door. You can look the door with them but not open it. It was made as the early 911 where simple to open by pulling the look. The look pin is inside a plastic sleeve from the upper door cover. The plastic pin sits on a rod and has a thread so you turn it up until it is flush if looked, cant fall out. The rod link is prebend in two directions to make a more straight operation. Get a new guiding sleeve with coresponding pin and it should work again. Grüsse |
