Question 3.2 Head stud and rod bolt torque question?

What is the correct way to torque the heads on a 84 3.2? Torque the heads first (Bentley) or cam housing first (Anderson)?
What torque? Bentley manual says ,I think, 15 ft-pounds then 90 degrees or should you go to a set torque? With or with out lube?
Rod bolt torque? To lube or not to lube? Bentley says 12 Lbs than 90 degrees or torque to 39 lbs (Anderson)?

Thanks,

Tim

i always assemble the heads, towers, cams, rockers and shafts on the bench, turn the cams so the keyways are up and install the whole thing on the engine.( of course you will hear various ways and reasons to do it differently). don't forget the return tubes and air guides. criss-cross the center head at 15#, then the outside ones, then repete at 23#. lube the nuts and studs. the rod nuts are lubed and torqued to 15#, and then 90°±2°, according to the factory spec book. new rod bolts of course.

John knows his *****.

I personally mated the heads to a cam tower, installed the cam, had a helper turn it over and over as I torqued the cam tower down.
Then, I installed the set of heads on a bank and evenly (criss crossed) torqued the allen nuts to the cylinders, while a friend turned the cam over.

As for the rod bolts...there is a topic for great discussion.
It is very confusing... I can tell you that I didn't get the whole idea of torquing to 15 ft/lbs then turning the wrench 90 deg. That doesn't make sense to me. So, I very lightly oiled the bolts, then torqued them in stages to the value I needed.
Engine runs...hasn't exploded yet .

The bastard (in my opinion) is getting the cylinders over the friggin' rings! Bit of advice... buy a "QUALITY" ring compressor!

Put the cylinders over the pistons/rings on a bench top with a quality ring compressor. Leave enough of the piston exposed to allow installation of wrist pin and clip as piston is mated to connecting rod. This is a lot easier than fussing with a ring compressor between the studs. Jim
