Post Techron

This is a follow-up to my Weber Problem (I Think) post a few weeks ago concerning idle jets and float levels.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/009727.html

I cleaned the idle jets a few times and things would improve temporarily. I had also tried Gumout Extra carb cleaner in the fuel tank to no avail. Finally, I called the PO and he said "go out and buy some Techron. I used to put a bottle in once per year. It will completely cure the problem."

So I did. And it did. It's running so good, it's scary. -- Curt

Be sure to change the oil in about 500 miles. That stuff somehow gets in there.

What kind of damage is this supposed to cause? Or does it just break down the oil itself?

I know this has been discussed before, but can someone remind me of how to use the Techtron? It is a Chevron product, correct? Is it available anywhere else? I am planning a medium-sized weekend trip and was planning on trying it then. Thanks, Mike

Is that stuff the same as Forte carb cleaner?

There was a story from Mercedes (true?) that prolonged use of Techron can cause accelerated wear in the valve guides. Perhaps Techron dilutes lube oil in the guides?

Techron is available pretty much anywhere. It is a Chevron product. I bought it at a local Meijer discount store for about $8 a bottle (about 4 times what a normal carb cleaner costs). It's a synthetic formula. There was a warning on the back about only using it 2 times per 50,000 miles (or something like that, I don't remember). You add it to your fuel tank, just like other carb cleaners. I'm going to stop and look at another bottle so I can read the warning label in more detail.

TECHRON IS AN OK CHEVRON PRODUCT BUT REDLINE FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER AVAIL @ PEP BOYS IS STILL THE BEST STUFF TO USE. IT'S GOOD FOR CARBURETORS TOO. BMW HAS THIS STUFF BOOTLED IN A BLACK BEEMER BOTTLE AND CHARGES UP THE KAZOO FOR IT.

I was told that the method is 20oz in an empty gas tank. Drive very spirited for as long as it takes to reduce the gas tank to 1/2 and refill to top. Drive again. Change oil so that the dilution of the oil (via dislodged particulates and other impurities) is not a problem for daily running.

I don't know where I came up with the twice per 50,000 miles thing??????? (must have been another product I was looking at). Anyway, Techron actually recommends using a bottle every 3,000 miles! I'm sure that would be great for their sales numbers anyway . I'll have to try the Redline next time around.

I've gone 7,000 miles since the last oil change - and I've used 2 bottles of Techron. It didn't make my engine seem to run any better, but I'm assured that my injectors are clean.

From what I've been told, Techron and Redline are BMW warranty-approved. They recommend no more than 2 bottles per oil change and have no recommendation to change oil after adding Techron. BMW also recommend Chevron premium fuel which contains a small amount of Techron. If that's all true, it's a fairly strong endorsement.

Thumbs up

I've used this stuff regularly for over 10 years. The price has gone up nearly 50%. Be careful as there is a similarly labled product from Chevron that sells for half the price but it's not as good. The Techron now comes in two size containers. I usually order a case from one of the parts houses that carry it. Adding the stuff when your car is nearly empty just before you refill merely helps in the mixing. I never fill it all the way up so the dilution is stronger. I typically add about 12 gallons of gas. Since I follow the 'every 3000 mile oil change philosophy', I usually add the injector cleaner a couple of weeks before my oil change is due. I'm not sure what it can do if it gets into the oil, but I've never had an opportunity to find out. It works very well.

If I recall correctly, it was Porsche who issued a service bulletin, officially recommending the use of Techron. In that same bulletin, they advised changing the oil after the treatment. You can smell it in the oil when you have added it. I could never understand this...why does it not burn with the fuel?

My 83 knocked under hard acceleration when I first bought it. I ran a couple bottles of techron through a couple tanks of gas and the knock went away. I guess it cleaned the carbon out pretty well. Oil was rather black when I changed it. Interested to see how black it is on next change.

After my brother heard about my success with Techron, he decided to give it a try. Not in a Porsche though. He's got a 90/91? Lincoln Towncar. Looks and runs like new, but has 206,000 miles on it! Anyway, puts the Techron in, drives it one day, and the next day the fuel pump fails!!! Oops, sorry 'bout that bro. Hopefully just a coincidence (it is the original pump). $600+ for new pump (installed)!

206,000 on the original pump? Probably not the Techron's fault.

Probably not the Techron's fault.

Would you be kind enough to call my brother and explain that to him? For some reason, he's not taking my calls right now ....

Yeah, better not recommend and "Liquid Plumber" for his clogged drains! That could get expensive.
