Cruise (out of) Control unit not working
 

My cruise control unit has stopped funtioning ('86 Cab). Manipulating the control level seems to do nothing. This used to work fine.

I am not sure where to begin looking. I don't think the unit is supposed to work under 40 mph, so how can I test it in my garage? Anyone know how I can test and isolate the problem?

I have the same problem with an 87 cab. I remember 3 years ago trying to sort it out using the factory manual, pulled the control unit out from under the dash and checked everything-never could find the problem-blaiming the control unit itself. I think I'll try again. Sure would be nice to have that thing working.

My cruise didn't work when I first got my car. All I did was find the cruise control unit which was in the front trunk near the brake fluid reservoir. In my car ('82 SC) its a silver box a bit bigger than a playing card deck. I just unplugged and wiggled the connections. This fixed it and it has worked ever since. I don't use it alot but I think it works well below 40mph. You might want to try checking connections first.

In my opinion this is one of those options Porsche should not have put on the cars. Just like power windows, alarms, keyless entry, and power mirrors. Must keep the car as light as possible. Plus everyone I know has problems eventually with those power windows and other newfangled gizmos. What can I say I am a minimalist.

Repairing my cruise is on my to do list as well. Even though I would rarely use it, I don't like the idea of something not working on my car. Anyway, Gunter I looked for the silver box on my '82SC where you described but couldn't find it. Is it behind the vent blower/ductwork or should it be in plain view right next to the brake booster? TIA

It should be on the drivers side behind the carpet and cardboard cover that hides the fresh air blower. Beteen the fresh air blower and the brake do-hickey. I can't think of the name of it so how is that for a technical term.

It is right next to part #29 in the diagram.

Check the clutch stop switch under the clutch pedal - this has a tendency to fail, and also shuts off the cruise control...

Hello

Get an old junked mechanical breaker distributor. Remove the drive gear and place a drill on that shaft. Now make an interface wire one ground and one to the contact.

Open acces hole or pull speedo. hook up wires. turn key for ignition and start the drill. 600 revs are equal to 10m/s or 36 km/h. Just look at your speedo.

Cruise will normaly not jump in under 40 km/h.

And don´t run the engine as cruise will rev it to heaven.

This might sound stupid but have you checked the fuse and relay that controls the cruise control? I think that the fuse is # 4 and relay is IV.
