TARGA NEEDS ROOF RACK!! Help....
Anyone have a source for the proper brackets to mount a roof rack to the factory spots on an SC targa? Is there an aftermarket source? Thule, Yakima etc.?
As always, advice is appreciated. If you have one to sell, Double Bonus. Cheers, Andrew ![]() ![]() |

Road bikes and skis. Avid road biker and skier. Bikes x2 weigh in at about 20# each. Skis are negligible. Bought a set of snows. Just need the rack to complete the touring package. I usually drive from Omaha to the front range or to Steamboat to ski. Usually at least once a season to Telluride and Purgatory. Total of six times planned this season at a week each. Sometimes more. (lucky I can work from wherever I can plug in with my laptop and cell.)
I would use a rearlid rack, but I have that damned tail. I've been looking for a deck lid to swap out and hang or bolt a rear rack on thbe damned thing. Frustrating. All psyched up but can't take the long boards. |

Andrew~
I was going to share my success that I've had with my own rearlid rack, but now not neccessary... I've never seen a roof rack for the 911, not to say that there isn't one... Good luck in your search!

A roof rack was a factor Porsche option, but I have not tried to price one at a Porsche dealer and I believe, from previous conversations on this forum, that that were discontinued long ago.
I am going to end up fabricating one myself sometime in the next year.

Very interesting....
I'm very curious to see what this factory unit looks like! I'd love to see a picture of your finished product, if you decide to fab one up yourself!! Good luck!

I believe you could fit a normal Thule roofrack made from rain gutters to your front windshield frame, however it would obviously be at an angle. The factory rack I believe attached here too, but the "feet" for the rack were angled to match the slope of the windshield. However, with Yakima racks, which I believe have tubular, round main bars, it wouldn't be an issue. With Thule's this could be a problem for the ski carriers, however you could put a twist in the Thule rectangular bars to account for this (you might have to tweak the mounting feet to toe out also).
The rear rack for the Targa's I believe bolted on, through two threaded holes in the Targa bar which are normally plugged. A metal frabrication shop could easily make up some brackets that go from these holes up to a roof-rack bar, and it is almost assuredly cheaper than the factory setup. ![]() For bikes you could probably just get away with one front bar for the forks, and just have the rear wheel sit on the rear window/targa bar, and use some type of strap to keep it from bouncing around. |

Came across this old thread while searching for bike transport options for my Targa. Wholberg (if you're still around on Pelican) did you ever rig up a rack system like mentioned in your last post on this thread? If so (or if anyone else has), do you have pics that you could post? Cheers.

Wow, I can't believe it's been 5 years since I posted that. I worked on it on and off and designed a rear mount and mocked-up a front mount, but that whole project kind of got shoved to the back of the garage and I forgot about it. I will pull the stuff out and see what I can do this summer.

Hey Wholberg,
Thanks for going back to the garage to help out ski wagen and all others here that are interested in rack options. I've imagined ways to put a 17' canoe on top of my targa, but the competing notion of leaving the car at some river takeout in rural Louisiana or Mississippi sort of stifles the dream for me. Putting skis on top and driving the gorge road to Taos, NM, on the other hand, would be really cool. Again, thanks for entertaining ski wagen's query.
